Beginner Cat Photo Skills

A Ginger Clowder in Sport Mode

I have a collection of ginger cat photographs to share. What makes them a bit more special is that I used ‘sport’ mode on my Canon 1300D to try and capture movement. Shutter speed and I, as regular readers know, is a challenge for some sometimes.

Some photographers look down on ‘modes’ like Sport but, until I master rapid movement with settings, like shutter speed that I can adjust myself, it is a good substitute!

Neko Ngeru Cat Cafe has suddenly become ‘Ginger Cat and Kitten Central’ with gorgeous Floyd (adult) and three charming and totally gorgeous young cats of about five months old. They are called Cameo, Bill and Toast!

In the first picture of leaping kittens you can see Bill and Cameo. Not 100% pin sharp but an improvement on previous attempts. I also changed the AWB (automatic white balance) to ‘fluorescent’ as the cats and the cafe looked a bit blue. Yes, I nearly forgot to change it back!

Two Ginger Cats Playing With a Cat Toy

Bill is a really dark ginger tabby and from the size of his tail it looks as if he will grow into a fine man cat. Cameo is an elegantly pale ginger, again, he has the strong tail. Both youngsters are lively, approach people and have turbo charged purrs. Being able to get a fun action shot of the two boys was awesome fun.

  • Many of the cafe cats are friendly and will sit on lap of a person they like or trust; but it was a really nice surprise to have such strong purrs coming from the young gingers who are new to the cat cafe.
Ginger cat playing with a Feather

I captured Cameo wrestling with the feather toy a customer was waving to tempt him. Most of my captures were a bit too blurry but I loved this one and I edited it from the wider landscape orientation (the flat rectangle) to the upright portrait view and cropped in close which works. (Always something to try if you are almost but not quite happy with your subject!)

Ginger Kitten Pouncing on a Feather Toy

The last two images are of Bill. He jumped forward towards a feather toy and seems to be crushing the coloured tube as well. Not the usual cat photograph but I think it works well catching a cheeky youngster at play from the back and he was concentrating so hard!

I used Sport mode all of the time here as I was frustrated with my lack of Shutter Priority success. I will keep trying but for now sport mode works a treat. It proves that there are other ways to achieve your goal! So, have you ever tried sport mode on your camera?

  1. I love ginger cats! My Mom had a sweet one named “Tangy”…

Great shots! I love Sport Mode! I have in the past used it often in my job for capturing things like high school football games, car racing, horses running, and even my Huskies having zooomies! I’m not too proud to say I use it and love it! I also love Canons! My camera of choice, although now retired, I seem to use my iPhone more! (I’m still shocked that I basically converted!)

  3. I have never used the sport mode. But now, I’m curious to try it. I wonder if it would capture Henry better. I’ve got to search for it. This is a great tutorial with some truly adorable models, Marjorie! I bet you had fun taking their photos. I’m sharing this with all my pet parents so they can learn to use the sport mode as well.

  7. What gorgeous gingers! Bill, in particular, has beautiful markings which remind me of Mishmish, one of the Outside Kitties I used to feed, but who just disappeared one day.

  8. A delightful final image. Trying all your settings will give you a far bigger range of skills to deploy. The secret will be knowing when to use and being able to get to thee quickly enough to win the day.
