Beginner Cat Photo Skills

A Tortoiseshell Portrait

I like to inspire you to switch things up once in a while. Review a portrait you like or one you think could be better. Here’s a sample on how you can change without spoiling a photograph you love.

What do I mean change?

I wanted to see if I could freshen up the portrait focusing on our lovely angel tortie Sienna. Many of you will remember our beautiful girl and, as you can see, the spirit of the tortoiseshell lives on in this fierce stride. It is one of a series I created looking down the length of the wooden bannister on our deck.

I love the original picture of the confident cat looking ahead and moving towards the camera. But, if I want to make an image more in portrait orientation what could I do?

Here are two different ideas to try yourself. A change of orientation, and colour.

I have cropped the photograph and added a touch of a special effect called Mystical in Luminar Neo, with a boost of extra vibrancy. Then, I experimented with a black and white treatment.

You will have to tell me which you prefer?

The dramatic vibrant colour version?

Or, the simpler black and white?

  1. Both are so lovely, and I do love the beautiful cat’s color, yet I find myself leaning toward the B&W! Glad I don’t have to pick!

  3. Such a great idea! I love how you softly edited the photo, and it totally changed it. The color version shows the fur and claws so beautifully. It looks like another award-winning photo, Marjorie.

  4. I like both enhancements, but for me the coloured one stands out, and it brings out her Murder Mitts a bit more, teehee!
