Beginner Cat Photo Skills

A Change of Colour Makes a Difference

Colour brings our cat photos to life. We see the liveliness of a cat’s cheeky look, or an active pose and, even if they are not perfect, your cat captures are a joy to see.

But…

How about a little bit of a rad touch? Think just a little bit different – not much, just a bit.

Think outside the cat box!

In these stressful times we have a lot to worry about BUT exploring and playing with your images lets you cut loose without worry for a short while. No one is watching, no one is telling you what to do. This is your party, YOU have all the fun!

OK let’s get to it!

I am including this first image because I hope it will make you laugh.

A Giraffe Transformed

Meet one of the wonderful Giraffes from Wellington Zoo. They are marvellous and impressive creatures and one of my highlights when we visit. The Zoo has high raised platform you can stand on to take photographs, and this is especially fun at lunchtime!

Below is an edited version.

I am submitting this one to the Mono Awards! It has been cropped so it stands in portrait orientation. It looks almost like an abstract of a weird and dangerous creature.

A Mysterious Tabby

Secondly, Remember the image of Toulouse from my post about the amazing double exposures a Nikon Z50 can do? I snapped some bright green leaves, then Toulouse out exploring. It is in landscape mode.

Double exposure of ghostly cat layered with a wash of faint green leaves.

I was curious (see there’s that exploring mode again?) to see what I could do with the image. I rotated it and cropped it to a portrait.

When you look, the cat shape is clearer in back and white. Still ghostly but changing the orientation has altered the view of the image to something different.

A Cute Ginger Won’t Look

On Instagram we have a colleague who does a post called #wontlookwednesday for all those times your cat will not look at the camera, which we can all relate to.

I am including a profile portrait of Jack looking quiet and serious and not looking at the camera! I was curious to see what would happen. I have brightened up the image and boosted his ginger colour very lightly in this first shot.

I transformed the portrait into a monochrome photograph, but this one, I am not excited about. What do you think? This exploration has not turned out as interesting as I hoped.

I did not want to push the photo editing sliders too far. I was aiming at something as wonderful as my final Jack portrait, which works much better. There is not enough difference between Jack and the background. [Bear this in mind of you playa round with your portraits.]

Exploration has success and failures. The fails can be shrugged off as a learning experience as every edit teaches us something. You learn which tool works for you and which one you will never use again!

Sometimes though, your explorations will end up with a lovely image like this one…

You explore. You learn. You have fun! Go for it!

  3. That giraffe image is a delight, and we can see why you are entering it. I do hope it wins, along with your cat image you posted about and asked opinions on.
