Cat Portraiture Tips and Inspiration

A Silver Tabby Photo Essay

Our boy Silver is the subject of today’s selfie photo essay. This short photo presentation allows me to show you how he has grown and become a complex and independent character.

I showcased some of his older photos and it still hurts my heart that he grieves for his best friend Riley who died several years ago. He is still a lost soul, although he always comes home for his meals. I always tell him we love him very much.

Your cats change and develop over time. They know they are loved, and keeping a record of them in all their moods and ages is so important for all of us.

Keep your record of your cats safe and, consider adding a folder somewhere like Dropbox or a flash drive for those precious images. I keep a least two backups on external drives.

Update it with the photos you are proud of or that make you smile. Each image is a treasure and, no it does not have to be perfect, it is a precious memory.

  1. Silver is so beautiful. Oh, how our beloved pets do grieve the loss of their mates. Like your Silver missing dear Dash, my Wolfie missed his FiveSibes family (including his two siblings) so much up until the day he joined them at 13.5 years old. I totally agree – back those precious photos up. I, too, have them on several drives and all the memory cards. Now, I just need to organize them! I also love your suggestion of updating them to ones that mean something. Something I need to do. I have saved everything. Great essay, Marjorie! Pinning to my Mews News to share with others.

  3. Silver is beautiful, these pictures are great! It’s amazing how pets can grieve the loss of their companions. My cat Maggie was never the same after my other, older cat Mousey passed.

  4. Dogs and cats can grieve as profoundly as people. After Jasmine’s passing, our boy Rottie was quite lost. Not only they were good friends but she was his guiding light. Fortunately, when we adopted Cookie, he took right to her and followed her lead, though most of the time he had no idea why they were doing certain things. Such as, why are we digging a hole here? (mouse hunting). Why are we chasing the frogs? He copied what Cookie did but had no clue why LOL

    • You are right. Our boy Silver has not been the same, he doesn’t have that friendship yet. I hope he does one day.

  5. Silver is a handsome boy! You captured him so well, which is no surprise. I love your idea of keeping records in Dropbox or on thumb drives. It’s definitely something you don’t want to lose or have to search for if needed. I’m sorry, Silver is still grieving. My boy, Macho, grieved his coral mate until they met again over the rainbow bridge. I’m still grieving both of them.

    He has gorgeous markings!

The other day I was ‘hunting’ through my old pics looking for some to use for today’s post, and I came across so many of Pipo…I had to (waste), use up time to enjoy them all. like you say even the imperfect ones are very precious now.

  8. It makes Us sad, too, to know that a kitty is grieving.
Silver is such a gorgeous kitty and that first picture, of him as a kitten, is totally adorable.

  9. We never truly are without our past friends as their essence moves on to another body and form. But memories of who they were, the joy they bring, is so very important and worth celebrating here and now and in the future.
