Silver and Riley Memories

I am reinstalling a couple of new browsers, including Firefox (again) and it came up with a link that touched my heart. In 2013 Silver lost his best friend, literally his heart friend. I have never known a bond like it.

These photos are screenshots I took from an old Facebook post and they still make me weep for the loss of little Riley.

When Riley was killed it changed Silver forever. I believe his heart broke and it has never fully repaired. He has become a quiet loner who wanders a lot more than he ever did before.

We do not try to keep him indoors all the time as this would cause him a lot of distress. He can also effortlessly lock-pick his way out of the cat flap.

Riley was, we think, a mildly CH cat and he and Silver were, as you can see, really good friends.

Never let anyone tell you animals don’t grieve. Silver became a different, and much sadder, cat after he lost Riley. It still breaks my heart. God Bless Riley, we miss you.

  2. Oh that is so sad, I am sorry about the loss of Riley, and I know Silver does indeed miss him. I know our feral cat grieved after our other feral who was her long time companion, died of old age. We saw her looking around for him, they would eat together at meal time.

  3. Cats do grieve, and some never recover. Giulietta was never the same after Fiona died. It does break your heart. We just have to love the one left behind even more. Thanks for hopping with us! 4. Of course kitties grieve and, seeing the picture of the two of them, and reading about how they loved each other, and about Silver’s heartbreak, makes me sad too, even though I never knew Riley, or what happened to him – as this was long before I started following this blog. Hugs and purrs to SIlver and to you, as you remember him.

  5. As sentient beings we should expect all cats to grieve as humans do. It is lovely when they pal up, and seeing such relationships always lightens the heart as well as reinforce our Buddhist beliefs.
Such lovely pictures to have, Marjorie 💙

  6. Cats — without a doubt — grieve the loss of their friends, and it is heartbreaking to know that Riley’s death was so very difficult for poor Silver. Sending love and purrs to Silver, and you, as you miss your beloved Riley. XO
