I don’t usually celebrate Rainbow Bridge Memorial Day as it is too close to losing Dash, but this post falls on my usual Thursday posting day and it seemed a good thing to do. This is a post from 2013. [Updated 28 August 2024]
It was a week after the utterly traumatic death of Dash Kitten but, the post also contained some genuinely positive news.
My Twitter friends had been so supportive and kept me sane and literally on my feet. My friend pointed me towards a tweet by Twitter superstar Sockington. Every cat lover on Twitter knew and loved him. That tweet is still treasured by me because someone important noticed a small partially-sighted cat who fundraised for those less fortunate than himself.
A week ago Dash died, taken from us suddenly and harshly. Recovery is coming thanks to the huge support of friends online over the past 7 days. The sun shines outside, we take a deep breath, remember to eat breakfast, and share our cups of coffee with our Twitter pals online – you guys have meant a lot this week. BUT we had some spirit lifting surprises we want to share…..
Meow Out From Sockington
Yesterday during my last check in for the day Teri Christopher @inquarters14 Twitter friend RT’d me a post that set me back on my heels. @Sockington had within that hour given a shout out to Dash – you can see it above. We were blown away, that Sockington, with followers numbering over 1,300,000 should have registered, let alone felt he should acknowledge Dash. You know, I think we stand a bit taller now at Dash Kitten now.
Also, two dear and close pals have also written blog posts that I would love you to read. @NerissaThCat and @MsSavyDo they are full of warmth and love. Nissy and Savvy were part of Dash’s big blog adventure not too long ago!
Finally, I must thank @NikePurrfektKat and her lovely mum Eugenie, Nike surprised us with an appeal she launched in Dash’s memory. She knew Dash would want to continue to help others and Upper Hutt Animal Rescue was the local rescue chosen to receive the donation. Nike did this unprompted, knowing that there would be no better way to memorialise a cat whose conscience was always with those in need.
By the time the You Caring Appeal closed, US$600 had been raised for Upper Hutt Animal Rescue. After a small deduction by YouCaring, the amount donated is NZ$720.
You can imagine, I am sure, the difference this might mean to a small rescue in tight economic times. We are grateful for Eugenie and Nike’s perceptive care and thoughtfulness and to the host of pals who contributed, and left heartfelt messages. I could never even have thought of this, let alone act on it, but Nike did, – we here in New Zealand are grateful. I just wish I’d had something like portrait mode on my smartphone when Dash was alive.
Purrs of sympathy, Marjorie.
Dash was such an inspiration, and it’s heartfelt all these years later to remember his powerful legacy. Love and purrs from Deb and Purr Prints of the Heart on behalf of Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day.
That’s nice but we miss Dash…
Now you know how very special you and Dash and the crew are! Sockington. Wow! It would be the same if it were reversed. Two giant forces on one internet. Sometimes when the tears still flow, the heart just has to smile. Luv, hugs, and purrs.
I am so sorry for your loss!

We all feel so helpless, but we keep sending out love and hiugs.
Our hearts broke when we heard the news – Dash was a wonderful and special friend to our anipal community. We are here for each other in good times and in tragic – the loss of a pal is painful and it always helps to have those that understand our true love and devotion to our pets.
The head peep saw Sockington’s tweet on her phone as she was walking into the office yesterday morning.Someone asked her on the elevator “What are you smiling about?” and it was too hard to explain. So glad that Dash got a shout-out from the most popular cat on Twitter. He certainly deserves the recognition. The generosity to Upper Hutt Animal Hospital is just another example of all of the amazing work that Dash did. Lots of purrs to you from all of us.
Sending more purrs your way…
That is so awesome that Dash got a shout out from Sockington! His spirit still resonates across the blogosphere.
Dash touched so many. He will be missed.
Since Mom doesn’t do Twitter, she doesn’t know some of these folks. But the generous donation sounds pawsome. We have read lots of posts in honor and memory of Dash. We hope that helps you with the grieving process. The loss of Dash was so senseless that we know it will take a very long time for you to come to terms with it. Please know that our mommy is praying for you. Wonderful Team Membership Leadership Award!
Dash was and still is loved. LOVED. Loved by all.
Purrs,
Nissy
