Unlock Your iPhone Camera’s Best Trick

Did you know your iPhone has a secret menu that can have a powerful influence on your photographs? You need to know this!

Your iPhone is packed with many of the features DLSR and Mirrorless folks take for granted but unless you know it’s there you are missing out in a big way.

Smartphone screen with a red arrow pointing at the top of the screen.

Your iPhone’s Secret Sauce

When you open your camera app, you probably see the usual suspects: Photo, Video, Portrait, etc. along the bottom of the screen but look for the small sharp upward arrow indicated on the screen above.

Swipe Right, Unlock Might

Swipe right (or down if you hold your smartphone in ‘portrait’ mode) on your screen to reveal a hidden menu packed with powerful tools. Think of it as a secret weapon for your photography arsenal that can lighten, brighten and sharpen!

Here’s what you will find:

  • Self-Timer: Perfect for group shots or capturing yourself in action.
  • Exposure: Control the brightness of your photos.
  • Formats: Switch between standard, square (great for Instagram), and more.
  • Live Photo: Capture a short video clip with your photo app.
  • Filters: Add a touch of creativity to your shots.
  • Flash: Adjust the flash settings for different lighting conditions.

So, the next time you’re ready to snap a photo, don’t forget to explore your hidden menu (and turn on the grid like in this still from superb game ‘Stray’). See which of the tools is going to be useful to you. You might be surprised at what you can achieve with your iPhone’s built-in camera.

Your cat might not care about the tools and technical specifications, but you’ll love the results when you start exploring!

BONUS TIP:

Turn on Grid. Settings> Camera> Scroll down> Grid

  1. So, want to hear something funny? You *can* teach an ol’ shutterbug new tricks! (Me!) I do use some of the special features for my photos, a lot, and do adjust many in a photo program…I just didn’t realize that arrow could get me to the menu right away! Ha! I’ve always ignored that, why? Have no idea! Pinning to my Shutterbuggin’ board to share your tip to newbies and even longtime photogs (like me!)
