Beginner Cat Photo Skills

Two Siblings Two Birthdays

The 8th of December is Silver and Miranda’s birthday. Both are believe it or not 13 years old. They were adopted as kittens.

This little celebration gives me a change to show you how your own photographs might change if you start, as I did, to look at how and why you take your photographs – with love, affection and a touch of skill.

The Welfare Officer Donna, from Upper Hutt Animal Rescue, a lovely lady, introduced us to the pair and Paul suggested we adopt them both. Here are two early photographs, slightly blurry (I know Janet at the Kitties Blue will agree kittens do not sit still) so much life ahead.

Miranda

International Worldwide Pet Blogging

Miranda is one of our tuxedos. She has always kept her sweet face and her joy for life. This photo is one that was posted on Instagram which preferred the square format at the time. She is wearing a Beastie Band collar. We got a handful via a US friend as they are great collars – bright cheerful and with fun themed prints. This is a simple Samsung compact camera shot.

Here is Miranda recovering in 2023 from her arrow attack. It is thanks to the After Hours Veterinary Surgery and Dr. Sally that we have our girl still and we are very grateful.

This photo was taken in ‘Portrait Mode’ on an iPhone. You can see how effective a smartphone portrait can be – right? Soft background and a focus on Miranda. The grey fur on her shoulder is where Dr. Sally shaved away the fur to remove the arrow.

This final portrait was taken with my Canon DSLR, and you can see how I have improved my photography over the years. Miranda is sharp against a very focus focus background (and I now use a watermark).

Silver

Silver is our only, rarer coloured, silver tabby. He has always been an independent young cat and endlessly teased his sister when they played. His shady portrait was taken with my Canon. He takes a wonderful photograph.

As you can see here, I was working on my action shots a few years ago. I will improve one day I promise!

Silver was friendly with a cat across the cul-de-sac where we live but, sadly, Riley died. The effect on Silver has been profound, and he has become a different cat without his friend. He is more quieter and more solitary. He still loves home though and we sometimes find him napping on a favourite cushion.

I cant believe they are 13 years old and living the good life with us.

Happy Birthday Silver and Miranda.
