Cat Portraiture Tips and Inspiration, Cat Reviews and News

Love a Photo? Celebrate It!

This week’s post is short, sweet and emphasises something I believe to be important, because so many forget until it is too late. What is it? Let me tell you.

Some time ago I wrote a blog post about how printed photos matter in our largely digital age. I wanted you to see that actually seeing your photo walk off the computer and on to a surface like a wood block, photo canvas or a ceramic mug can be an amazing and life enhancing way of showing off your best work.

  • Yes, this all works for dogs as well as cats!

Another reason is that, even now, some people do not spend a lot of time online. Their lives are busy enough in the real world and they do not need to invest much time on the Web beyond keeping up with a family member overseas once in a while, or keeping up with a long time friend.

The Impact of a Physical Photo’s Presence

You remember this lovely photo?

I will be honest I felt the image needed to be on display not just available look at it online ‘sometimes’. It is one of the images I am really proud of as I grow as a cat photographer. I know you will slowly collect a small handful of images you know are special.

TIP: Put a copy of your favourites in a digital folder or keep them safe

Display Decisions

Where would I find a display or presentation idea to do my image justice? First big decision!

Like you, I have definite ideas about how I would want my image to look in the ‘real world’. You might want to wrap yourself in a blanket created from your photo or create a photo canvas for your wall. Me? Well, on a visit to our local mall I enquired at one of the smaller shops that had a display of mounted images in different shapes and sizes.

Cat dad and I decided on mounting my favourite image on a piece off good quality wood would allow us to display it stood up, like a photo frame. We chose bamboo as the base which is slightly heavier than the plain wood option but slightly more expensive.

The base is excellent quality and the colour reproduction of the image is outstandingly good. The finished block looks durable and is stable, with a nice subtle surface texture to the image.

Save Your Best Images

Remember, if you have an image that you are proud of and want to display: either a photo or even a scanned drawing; you can have it mounted on almost anything!

Here are some ideas from online stores around the world. You can also get an image processed at your local shopping centre or mall, as I did. Snapfish and Zazzle are available in many countries for a modest price and will create an excellent product.

  • Block mounted
  • Ready framed print
  • Canvas print
  • Coffee mug
  • Photo blanket
  • Glass block
  • Greetings card

An image that touches your heart and that you are proud of, might be the perfect thing to display. It might also make a great gift to a good and supportive friend.

Look for that special image! Now go create something very real and very special.

  1. That wood block photo looks great! I would not have considered that. We have the most treasured collection of photos of Icy when we took her on some hiking trips in Sedona, Arizona. They are stunning and I’m so glad I printed them all out, got some fabulous frames, and they now hang as a collection on our bedroom wall. It is so meaningful, even more so now that she has left us. I will cherish those photos and memories forever.

  2. What a wonderful photo! I’m so about printing up photos. Photographs used to be my decor style! My other house was all decorated with photos of my family, which of course included my FiveSibes! We’ve been discussing which ones to enlarge here, we have so many wonderful pics of the grandkids and with my last dogs, that I need to get this done. I love on canvas (I used to have matted & framed ones, but now I love all the other options that do not include glass!). We’ve been also looking at Mixtiles. Either way, I have a big list of new prints to get printed! I think sometimes now with the cloud and being able to see them all the time, we forget they are not on display to enjoy and let others enjoy, too. Thanks for the great reminder to get going on this!

  3. I must start printing some of my photos also and framing them as I have so many and it would be awesome to see them all the time, great post and reminder that we need to have them around us not on our computer

  4. You are so right, Marjorie! We need to print our favorite photos and keep them in locations where we can enjoy them more often. I’m so glad you printed this darling photo of Paul and Taz. It’s so precious! I hope you enter it in a contest this year. Honestly, I’m not sure I would’ve thought of printing onto a wood block or a bamboo block. But this is a great idea. Like you said, it can sit anywhere. Great article and reminder! I’m sharing with all my pet parents.

  5. This really warmed my heart. I just recently finished a photography class, and while I grew a lot in it, it also illustrated how far I need to go. You made me reflect on the nice photos I’ve done, and that sometimes everything just comes together to give you a special image. I hope to take many more of those with my precious puppies.

  6. What a lovely photo on that bamboo block. Now you can admire it anytime you wish.
I have three 11 x 10 canvas prints of the three who were the originators of our blogging journey, MJF, Pipo & Minko. So I can talk to them when I need to tell them something…or just remember the good times we had together.

  8. The photo looks lovely on the bamboo block. I have one framed photo on our wall of Ivor and myself taken on a cruise. I also have a gazillion photos, paintings and blocks of mostly Eric and Flynn, but also a few of the cats who came before!
