Beginner Cat Photo Skills

Loki At Neko Ngeru Cat Cafe

I visited Neko Ngeru Cat Cafe in Lower Hutt for Cat Colouring Night and took along my camera. There were some ‘new cats on the block’ due to several successful recent adoptions and it is always lovely to meet the newest cats.

This is Loki. He is four years old and learning to find his place in the cat cafe. After a nervous start he is realising people are nice and friendly and he came up for a head butt from us. I have cropped this photo to a square as there was a lot of ‘nothing’ around Loki!

I wanted to share a few less than perfect images too because I think they show real cat purrsonality and they are sharp and we all love sharp – right?

Sometimes your photo may not be absolutely pitch perfect but if it hits a spot, raises a smile, or provokes thought, it can be considered a success.

Like this one of Loki helping me unpack my pencils!

Most importantly, I want you to look at the way I took the photos.

This is Loki saying ‘Hi’ and wanting to join in colouring! I love the intense look and his tabby fur. What he was trying to say? The photo doesn’t just trim his ears, they are entirely outside the frame of the photograph but the photo Still Works.

  • Eye sharp (check)
  • Fur clear and sharp (check)
  • Whiskers a little out of focus but still an important part of the photo (check).

I LOVE this last one.

Loki was super close and there is no way I could adjust the focus in time as I was taking more photos! It was taken after the photograph above and what a difference 🙂

I sharpened it as best I could in Luminar Neo but, honestly, it just makes me smile. The friendly paw reaching forward, the curious sniffy nose and the graceful fan shape of the whiskers.

It’s a different look and closer than you might usually get with a camera! Sometimes that’s what matters more than perfection isn’t it?

We learned that Kitties Blue lost their wonderful tortie Astrid who one of the first of the Kitties.

  1. You’ve shown Loki off in a very special way. My photos don’t come out so hot, but they help me remember the moment and share it with others, and that’s about what I need for them to do.

  4. What a cute kitty and I love your photos! Those reddish areas on his whisker pads are so beautiful! Love that second to last photo where you can see the end of his tail floating into view. Cat movements sure have a strong role in helping to compose the pics we take!
