Yes you can and they will often pose nicely for you. Especially if you visit conservation conscious Staglands Reserve, near Wellington, New Zealand as I did recently. Of course I was armed with my Nikon Z50 which is fun and portable.
Emu roam across most areas of mainland Australia from the coast to snowy mountains preferring open grasslands, shrubs and forests. There are also several in Staglands that you can get reasonably close to or use a zoom option.
I loved capturing their photos, although I got a lot of blurry ones because they decide to move, just like cats.
Emu Portrait
I took a couple of shots that I am pleased to say, came out nice and sharp. I think I prefer the portrait orientation that focuses on the cute Emu eyes and face, rather than the landscape orientation which is below. I can expand the sides a little using Affinity Photo or Luminar if I want to give the portrait a bit more room.
There is a lot of empty space around the subject that draws attention away from the emu in this landscape shot. But, you do get a better view of the lovely soft focus bokeh background with the shallow depth of field.
The more I look the less I can decide.

OMG!!! That face is so incredibly sweet! This is another award-winning shot. Emus are cute, at least from a distance. I know Henry would love to play with one, but I don’t think they’d treat him very nicely.
That is the cutest face!! Here’s something crazy. I was looking through images today on Pixabay or Pexels (not of emus), and an almost identical picture popped up and I couldn’t help think how adorable and now I see this!
How absolutely adorable! I love Emus, they are just the cutest. I definitely prefer the portrait shot, it really shows the detail of his sweet, adorable face! That photo is so good, you could sell it!
In Canada Emu’s are something we see at the zoo, or occasionally at a farm. They are pretty cool looking birds (from afar but, I have a fear of large birds!) they definitely have a special face worthy of a beautiful portrait!
