A Life in Boxes by Milo (Review)

Milo and his dad asked if I would like to review Milo’s book. As it is a paean of praise to the one thing most cats love – boxes; why they matter; deep cat thoughts on boxes and how satisfying a box can be, I had to say yes. It is also the perfect way to celebrate Global Cat Day when every cat should have a space (or box) and be loved.

  • Dash Kitten received a copy of Milo’s book in return for an honest review.

As a loving tribute to Milo (2016 – 2024) his dad, Randy Parker has created this gorgeous alphabet and I know it will raise more than a few few smiles from cat fans. I am adding this to my 2026 book gifts recommedations post!

Each cat portrait has a gentle watercolour treatment that frames and enhances Milo (and handsome housemate Toby). I can imagine a cat loving Mum or friend enjoying this so much, browsing letter by letter. There is Milo the kitten peering out of boxes, grown up Milo lounging confidently boxes and (deep breath) a worried Milo with house packing boxes expressing the opinion that something is ‘not quite right’ here.

Each letter and image has a wry or humorous cat comment underneath and many of them will having you nodding your head in agreement at the very firm cat opinions on boxes, paper, and life as a cat. Under ‘O’ for example we encounter the prioritising of boxes and lunch, a deep and complex matter involving a box and the sound of a tin Opener. Sometimes Milo (reluctantly) acknowledges Toby, but you can tell he doesn’t mind him really.

An alphabet book for serious cat people, narrated by Milo, a real-life cat and blogger. Each of the 26 entries pairs a headline and watercolour illustration with a caption in Milo’s dry, self-important voice. His feline housemate Toby appears throughout, mostly as a foil.

Milo also began a blog, but realising it was hard work, decided to take a nap…
