Cat Portraiture Tips and Inspiration

Telling a Funny Cat Photo Tale

Today’s photographs I am sharing in spite of the fact they are a little bit grainy because fun photos make people smile even though they are not perfect. Sometimes we are too hard on ourselves as learners gaining in camera confidence.

Let me tell you about a recent fun opportunity I grabbed quickly when I realised a story was unfolding in front of me.

The story begins at Neko Ngeru Cat Cafe, Lower Hutt, on New Zealand’s North Island

This fluffy tail belongs to handsome Otis who is one of the Cafe’s permanent residents. I have heard a rumour there is a small queue of cat lovers who are keen to welcome him to their home but for now he charms visitors and loves paper bags.

Otis, as you can see is another bag fan and he slipped in with help from the cafe’s owner. There he stayed quietly observing the visitors and other cats thinking himself invisible (as every cat does).

After a while being quiet in his bag, curiosity got the better of Otis and he peeped out, feeling as if the world was ignoring him. (So like a cat – right?) What is going on out here? What am I missing?

Suddenly…

AAAGGHH!!! Macavity STOP IT!!! Get_Off_Me!

Floyd, who you met a few weeks ago, on the other hand is being given a head scritch and knows that Otis will manage just fine against mischievous young Macavity, as you can see in the last photograph.

HUH!

MY BAG, MACAVITY!

All of these images were a little bit dark which was my fault for misjudging the settings on my mirrorless Nikon Z50. They had to be lightened but, they tell a fun story.

Have you ever taken a bunch of photos and that tell a story? Sometimes it’s only two or three but the story is there!

  1. Haha! That picstory had me smiling broadly!
Our Minko was like that McCavity, always in everyone elses business…and when he hid he was sure to swat at any being who passed by…the bag/box became his lair. Too bad i’ve hardly any pics recording those times.

  3. I wouldn’t trust myself to get the right pictures to tell a story if I stick to single shots. Too often, I miss the best shot. I am more likely to make life easy for myself and simply take a video.

  4. Having the foresight is all well and good, but more often than not these adventures unfold as we watch. Changing from casual observer to story teller and capturer is not easy. But when it pays off, as in this case, it is so much fun.

  5. I’ve been lucky and caught a story or two, but you do have to be very fast. Whatever the camera/phone is set to is what you get!

  7. What a fun and very interesting story your were able to tell with these photos, Marjorie! We feel as though we got to know Otis, Macavity, and Floyd just a bit more than if you had just shared a single shot. 🙂

So, is shooting with a mirrorless camera lots different than with a DSLR?
