Her face is in clear focus, and Sienna is backlit by sunshine, mixed with some delicate shading. The more you look at her coat, the more colours you see, and what was ordinary suddenly becomes much more interesting.

- Never dismiss your cat capture without giving it a long hard look, maybe even a few days later. Look beyond the critical voice grumbling ‘oh it’s not great’. Observe shades in coats, sharp eyes, and tricks of the light. Don’t be too ready to press the delete button.
What Does Backlit Mean?
If you are confused by the term backlit.
It means light coming from behind (the back) of your subject. Either your cat, or a person. Light from the back can look dramatic or, like this, add a difference to a portrait. Sometimes it bleaches out a highlight but, this doesn’t always matter, especially if you love the photograph.
