Beginner Cat Photo Skills

An Unusual Portrait

Today’s cat portrait breaks all the rules for cat, and other pet portraits portraiture. This image is from April 2019 when our boy Harvey was very much alive and (a cheeky boy) with us.

Harvey is in the middle of the frame, and he is not even close to the camera but our eyes are almost at eye level. He is posed confidently and quietly at the top of the steps before we crowded the area with plants and other home chaos! It is a lovely photo to me.

Harvey is the subject of my story in Purrseverance and I have submitted his story to the Cat Writers’ Communications Contest. I am hoping that the Kitties Blue submit their thrilling tale of Sawyer’s escape and return home too, I still remember the worrying time, and it’s a great read!

On a fun and a positive note, I was interviewed by Mollie Hunt of the Cat Writers Association, and the results are up on the CWA blog. Check it out here!

  1. I love that photo, it is so simple and the focus is on Harvey which is great, he is such a good poser for you.

  2. Dear Harvey…sometimes those “unusual” photos are really pretty great ones! Wonderful interview…as a photojournalist, I love the question about what cat-themed items were on your desk! A nice twist on an interview question. I also loved your response, natch!

  4. Harvey is a very handsome cat! I hope you win. I just took a photography course and per my teacher, this is actually good composition. While it’s true he’s not in the middle of the frame ‘Rule of thirds’ you do frame him with the railing on the deck. It works very nicely.

Good luck on your entry! I hope you win.

  7. Hello, dear Harvey. We love the “unusual” portrait … sometimes the background helps tell the story of the kitty … where he (she) lives, what he (she) enjoys about their life there. Although we do a lot of close-up images, there are those times it is good to back away and show other parts of the world around. Now, we hop over and check out your CWA, good luck!

  9. Harvey’s portrait here may not be ideal, but I think it shows who he truly was, his personality comes through.

I wish you great good luck with the CWA.
