Tonk ‘N Jurassic World

Tonk ‘N Jurassic World

This week Owen takes us into the wild world of Jurassic World, the following up to one of the most popular blockbuster movies ever! So, is it worth making a return trip to the dinosaur theme park Owen?

Plot: The story of Jurassic Park continues when InGen opens a replacement called Jurassic World but things go wrong when an engineered dinosaur escapes.

Director: Trevor Colin Trevorrow
Starring: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio, Ty Simpkins, Nick Robinson, Omar Sy, B.D. Wong, Irrfan Khan

The latest summer blockbuster to hit theaters is a sequel to the Jurassic Park trilogy (according to the director this is a direct sequel to Jurassic Park). It has been 14 years since the last one came out and how does it hold up? It’s not bad, after seeing it though, I’m surprised it set all those box office records.

It has the Avengers Syndrome – it seems like a rehash of the first one. 2 kids Zach (Nick Robinson) and Gary (Ty Simpkins) Mitchell exploring the park get caught up in a loose dinosaur rampaging across the island. The only difference is Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) being brought in to essentially train the velociraptors. Credit to Pratt – I was worried he would play the charming rogue in every picture a la George Clooney but he does not in this one. In movies like this rarely do performances stand out for one reason or another, but Pratt has presence about him. He doesn’t carry the movie, but you notice the movie has a different feel when he’s not on the screen.

The movie starts slow, pretty much the 1st 45 minutes, then quickly picks up once the “villain” of the film, a genetically bred dinosaur named Indominus Rex, gets free. Grady realizes this is a more evolved dinosaur and seems to be the only who realized what they’re dealing with here. Once the dino’ gets loose, all hell breaks loose, and the park employees evacuate the park goes while the Containment Crew realize they need to eliminate the I-Rex. The 3rd act comes when Pratt gets his trained raptors involved and the showdown at the parks center gets a surprise visitor at the film’s climax.

Opinion: I liked, not loved, the movie. Seems a bit slow at times, and really takes a while to get going. Once it does though, the film is a lot of fun. Streamlined and focus for the 2nd half of the film makes up for the slow pace at the beginning.

However, it reeks of a Jurassic Park redux – 2 loose kids, loose dino, an expert who attempts to convince everyone the danger is worse than it seems, a shady deal going on (this time between the head of security (Vincent D’Onofrio as Vic Hoskins) and a scientist (B.D. Wong as Dr. Henry Wu – the only returning cast member from the original films)) made me feel like I’ve seen it before. Like I said not a bad film, but not the blockbuster knock me out my seat type.

See It: In Theaters – I hope I don’t sound like a contrarian just for contrarian’s sake but no need to rush out and see it opening weekend. Let the crowds die down and check it out the first week. The film’s better second half makes up for a slow paced beginning and the deja vu feeling you might get if you remember Jurassic Park.

Quick Hits
1) If you’re like me and like to go see movies in a “quiet” setting you might really want to wait as when I went a ton of kids were there. Although from my experience that might be awhile till the kids audience dies down.
2) I hate when directors act like the previous movies in a series don’t exist. In this case the second and third films don’t – What’s wrong with acknowledging them? It’s not like people don’t know about them and you can’t force them to forget – just roll with it!
3) Heard Jeff Goldblum might appear as Ian Malcolm – he did, but only in a brief mention.

1) Mad Max
2) Ex Machina.
3) Avengers: Age of Ultron
4) Love & Mercy
5) Jurassic World
6) Chappie
7) Maggie
8) Entourage
