The New Zealand Christmas Tree Pohutakawa

The New Zealand Christmas Tree Pohutakawa

This is the Pohutakawa (Po-HOOTA-kawa) known as the New Zealand Christmas Tree. Its Latin name is ‘Metrosideros excelsa’. You can find a short article about the Pohutkawa tree here.

As you will have seen from Silver’s Selfie Video yesterday, it is coming up to summer here and the weather gets warmer as our friends in the Northern Hemisphere get colder, even getting snow in some places!

Oh, I forgot to say, the Pohutakawa flowers in December, around Christmas time, when the weather is warm and summer is here. The trees look as though they have been showered in red. They are very different to trees Mum knows from England and Europe. Do you have any usual trees like ours?

  1. This is gorgeous. It reminded me a bit of the bottle brush and a crepe myrtle. After reading, I found it is in the myrtle order. The Christmas Tree designation is so appropriate. Thanks for sharing and hopping. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Angel Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth, Calista Jo and Cooper Murphy.
