I love exploring online for smartphone gifts that will make movies more fun to create. This equipment is mostly small and portable. It’s fun too and will help you enjoy your movie making a lot more. Most of the recommendations will not break the bank even the Adobe software, yes seriously!!
NOTE: I use Amazon affiliate links in my post.
Whether you are like me, expanding your skill set, or a total newbie starting your movie making journey, it’s fun to explore some of the extra equipment available. Shopping online is just like walking around a camera store so check these treats out.

Tripods for Movie Makers
A small tripod for stability like the CamKix is ideal. This model has a shutter remote control and several smartphone lenses that clip on. There are plenty of versatile tripods tailor-made for your phone so check out Amazon using ‘camera tripod‘ and you will be spoiled for choice.
Sounds for Smartphones
For home movies, the built-in microphone is more than adequate. You do not want to be stressing about the sound when you are capturing fun stuff. For voiceovers or interviews, however, a lapel clip or a desk-based ‘snowball’ microphone can be helpful. My favourites are:
Lights for Smartphones
If you are filming and find yourself bothered by unwanted shadows, there are selfie lights which do a great job brightening your immediate surroundings. If you are not sure what might fit, start here.
If you are considering using a DSLR camera to try extending your movie skills beyond the smartphone, use a proper tripod as most cameras become heavy quickly.
For the movie maker looking to improve their editing skills. Investing in good software is a real possibility. You have some great options for boosting your skills.
Try a year’s subscription to Adobe’s movie maker Premiere Pro. A subscription will cost a lot less than outright purchase. You also have access to the best Adobe has to offer.
If you plan to use screencasts as part of a rescue or blog work Screenflow is definitely worth a look. You can also find out more about Screenflow here. Their tuition is impressive and the rang of video how to’s unequalled.
One software we are currently investigating is Da Vinci Resolve. Look out for our report soon.
BONUS: Smartphone Photo Help
Photoshop might be on your photo editing wish list but beyond your budget. Did you know you can get a year’s subscription to the king amongst photo editors instead?
For those who simply don’t need the sophistication of Photoshop. The versatile Adobe Elements software package does everything a beginner will need.
For the perfect pet view
If you would prefer a more relaxed ‘view’ of your pets, install the perfect pet watching device, a Petcube. We have reviewed two models the stylish Play and the early model classic Petcube. There is now a treat dispensing model the Petcube Bites which will brighten your pet’s day while you are away by tossing pet treats from the storage silo at the top of the camera.
I hope these can help you make an informed choice about some of the extra equipment you might buy. Don’t forget too that many of these are useful for your DSLR filmmaking kit.
