A People Picture Parade This Week

Today the Pet Parade gets some street photography practice in with the Round the Bays 2019 Walk (approx. 6.5 kms/4 miles).

  • The settings I used were Av and F5.6 with ISO 200.

As I was with friends, and in the middle of a crowd of 14,000 people I could not stop and do much setting adjustment so set my camera and hoped I would be OK.

If you look at my first images you see how as a newbie I might have used an automatic setting to let the camera work out how to get rid of the shadows in Image 1 (easier perhaps). In Image 2, the crowd passes by Te Papa Museum where it is brighter.

Away from the taller buildings, people moved into the sunnier part of the walk and Image 3 was more successful. You can see people walking as well as Wellington’s harbour front.

Older Images of Round the Bays

Round the Bays is an annual event with over 14,000 people of all ages taking part. It is family-friendly and low pressure. Many of us were taking photographs as we walked around the edge of Wellington’s bay roads that usually hum with traffic, not humans.

The weather was warm C24/F75 and there was plenty of water available for us all, including the Tyrannosaurus Rex. I did see the girl take the head off a few times to stop herself melting!

Street Photography Practice

I am usually a cat photographer, not a people person but any cats were probably basking in the shade and laughing at the humans so I tried to capture some human subjects without being too invasive.

The first is a young boy whose colourful cap caught my eye. The background is still a bit busy but the depth of field means the people are fuzzy.

My second picture, believe it or not, was full of feet around the athlete who has finished her run. I had to clone most of them out. So I ended up with no depth of field at all. One positive thing though. I am pleased with how sharp the athlete looks.

Cheating with a P Mode Shot

This last picture was taken when I was tired and in need of a single picture to show the finishing field with its food tents, and corporate areas. Many of Wellington’s major companies encourage their members to take part and celebrate with them at the finish line.

  1. Yay! Well done for a great achievement. Love the shots too, and I have been assured by Mrs H that she has taken many pictures of newbie dubious quality when she started to use her Box Brownie camera. You got some great colours there and the light is gorgeous.
