Welcome to one of the main reasons Instagram (IG) became the ‘go to’ app for so many people, the Selfie.
All of the images this week were taken with my smartphone an iPhone 6S. I also love doing cat selfies, the Photo Lab one below is different and fun. Let’s explore the #selfie #52assignments!
For those working along with the projects the assignment can be done any time you have the opportunity whether this is planned or an impromptu sharing of a fun location or event. You may sieze a moment or plan ahead – everything works.

If you check out the book you will see a very inventive range of self portraits. As well as the usual point the camera at yourself idea, some people use shutter delays on the smartphones then go and pose some distance away. Other people use Burst mode as a great option to catch one photo that shows you looking great, even if the rest of the selfie snapshots have your eyes closed!

Top Instagram Selfie Tip
Instagram adores data, and so if you take a selfie to share tag your friends then make sure they like your photos! This creates what is called a ‘virtuous circle’ friendly liking and sharing by people you know which generates more interest.
You can ask friends to share if you like, but the point is to get attention that Instagram will notice.
An interesting comment in the book from Adam Juniper is the return to the subject of your own account’s visual look also known as branding, where your treatment of your selfies forms part of the distinctive ‘identity’ that you may be starting to develop for your photos and your IG account.
You might do this by:
- Posting regular self portraits.
- The use of a specific filter or frame
- The use of specific colours which relate to your identity or ‘brand’.
- Use a selfie stick for a shot you can frame better. The stick moves your smartphone further away for a better shot.
Don’t Be Predictable
Selfies that get the most attention are slightly unusual, inventive of breathtakingly cute or amazing. So, you do take a selfie try not to post photographs that anyone culd take stood in the same spot. Dino Rechmuth has some great selfies on his Instagram feed if you need inspiration.

Great tips and nice pictures!
The hardest selfies for me to ‘get’ are the ones where I try to get the pup(s) in them as well…technically an ussie, LOL!
I like the pic of you with the orange kitten on your lap.
Great tips as usual, Marjorie! I always learn something in your posts, so thank you. 🙂
