Meet Smaug The Dragon (Video)

09/10/2017 by Marjorie Dawson 8 Comments

We want to revisit middle-earth dragons for our Middle-Earth post this week. In particular we want to enjoy the spectacular fire drake who is one of the ‘great’ dragons from Tolkien’s world. Join us as we take a look at the fabulous work Weta Workshop did for Smaug in The Hobbit movie ‘The Desolation of Smaug’, and for this amazing model. We also want to explore a few dragon links with you.

Some Details for Smaug The Dragon

The model Smaug was created by Weta Workshop to celebrate the Hobbit movies, and he was installed at Wellington Airport. In the departure lounge he caused many nervous glances because he was behind them as travellers came into through the airport doors and pushed their trolleys forward to register. You can also get a sense of the scale of Smaug’s model size from our photograph.

According to Weta Digital, Smaug is enormous. He is twice the size of a jumbo jet and covered in a million dragon scales. Holy er.. smoke! There is a Weta model of Smaug here that you might enjoy seeing too!

Actually seeing a scaled down head when we shot our movie footage was exciting enough. There was so much detail, and ….. watch the eyes in the video *shivers*! Weta Digital give a report on Smaug most feared of Middle-Earth Dragons here.

My claws are spears…. My wings a hurricane

You can read a lot about how Smaug the dragon was created in this fascinating FXguide post and for the really brave you can actually watch an interview Smaug gave to Stephen Colbert here.

If you want to take a look at some of The Hobbit costumes, made for the actors who starred in the movies you can see our collection here.

Have a great Middle-Earth Monday!

    Oh My COD!
He looks just like Smaug in Mommy’s old Hobbit calendars!!! Scary!
I am so happy that they only have rain forests and west coast native art to stroll through at YVR (Vancouver) (Though the giant flying thunderbird was a little scary) or I might have decided to go back to Iran!
