Last week’s pet gift guide has gone down a storm. Thank you all for the social media shares and visiting the small business we support in the current times of crisis. This week I introduce my books for pet lovers gift guide.
What do you buy for a pet lover to read and where do you buy it?
Let me recommend a few unique books for you to explore and treasures for you to discover. There are cats, and dogs, hamsters and ravens. I will be adding more as my readers suggest others (because my readers are fabulous like that!)
Although I am an Amazon affiliate, I also recommend you to visit your local bookshop, they can order a book even if it is not in store. Shop local if you can and keep your local economy moving. Preserve jobs in your own town or city as much as you can.
*Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase using one of these links, we will receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.
Let me introduce you to Bentley. His mom is co-host of the Pet Parade, alongside Bionic Basil and the B Team, and he is the star of my first recommendation.
The Returns
Format: Kindle and Paperback
Melissa Clinton writes under the pen name M K Clinton and I include her popular ‘Returns’ series here. Readers will love this and I recommend you start with Volume One.
“What happens if you arrive at the Pearly Gates before your time?
F.B.I Agent Bentley Clanton finds out the hard way as he is directed to a little-known area devoted to correcting glitches in the longevity system. The Returns Department specializes in finding appropriate bodies for “early arrivals” before sending them back to earth.”
The Crazy Cat Lady Cozy Mysteries
Format Kindle and Paperback
Mollie Hunt is a member of the Cat Writers Association (CWA) and author of a series of cat novels called the Crazy Cat Lady Cosy Mysteries. There is a holiday novella, Cat Noel which I have read and recommend.
New Book Launches on National Cat Day 29 October: Cat Conundrum.
Harriet The Hamster Princess
Format: Kindle, Hardback and Paperback
If you think hamsters can’t be epic heroines in a story. Ursula Vernon the author wants you to think again!
Harriet Hamsterbone is not your typical princess. She may be quite stunning in the rodent realm (you’ll have to trust her on this one), but she is not so great at trailing around the palace looking ethereal or sighing a lot. She finds the royal life rather . . . dull. One day, though, Harriet’s parents tell her of the curse that a rat placed on her at birth, dooming her to prick her finger on a hamster wheel when she’s twelve and fall into a deep sleep. For Harriet, this is most wonderful news: It means she’s invincible until she’s twelve!
Embers of the Raven
Format: Kindle and Paperback
Looking to step beyond cat books and dog stories? Try this.
Inspired by Greenlandic mythical beings, this short Christmas story captures the dramatic winter landscape of Greenland with a festive twist for the holidays.
Beneath the dark polar night sky the troll lopes across the Arctic landscape collecting children for a feast. Nissimaaq, the hunter, enlists the help of a northern dwarf, Mikissok, and his raven to return the children to their family before the turn of winter.
The September Day Series
Available in print and ebook form.
Always a great addition to every pet lovers gift guide, author Amy Shojai writes a mean pet thriller. You will be gripped by the first adventure in this five book series about animal behaviourist September, and dog Shadow. Read the write up here:
“Animal behaviorist September Day protects her broken heart by keeping everyone at arm’s length. Still distraught over her husband’s death in the line of duty, she heads back to her Texas home to launch a dog-training business. But her grief takes a back seat when her autistic nephew goes missing in a freak blizzard.”
Black Cats Tell All
Format: Paperback
This needs to be part of the purr-fect holiday gift guide for pet lovers. An anthology curated by Layla Morgan Wilde that celebrates the black cat. For the black cat family or owner there is no other choice! This book is packed with stories of how much these fascinating cats mean to their owners, how they arrived in their homes, and how they are loved.
At last, a celebration of black cats to reverse negative stereotypes and superstitions. This collection, the first of its kind, narrated by the cats will move and amuse you with their tell-all stories, fun purrsonality profiles, and stunning photography. The gorgeous full-color anthology features over 100 black cats from all over the world including YouTube celebrities Cole and Marmalade
Catwoods – Stories and Studies of our Feline Companions
Format: Paperback only
Leah Alford observes domestic felines indoors and later studies wildlings like foxes and raccoons who live outdoors amidst the glowing, dense leaves of the Appalachian jungle. Alford and her husband have rapport with each cat; with looks, gestures, purrs, and meaningful visual cues, the cats voice their declarations and diatribes. Catwoods
Our Very Own Dog
Format: Hardcover and Paperback
One of a series featured by Read Brightly that shows children how to treat different species of animal.
Pet books can be cute and play an important part in making learning fun while teaching children about compassion to animals.
The arrival of a pup to the household is a big addition! With Our Very Own Dog, even the youngest readers can learn what to expect and how to chip in to make Fido feel at home.
Lola The Rescued Cat
Format: Paperback (Pawtographed copies available)
The story of one cat’s survival and rescue. Written from Lola’s perspective this is a happy book for any cat lover. This is a ‘happy ending’ cat book packed with humour and photos of Lola from her desperate kittenhood to her current life as an online blogger with sister Lexy.
You can get in touch Lola and author Dawn White via their blog to request a ‘pawtographed’ copy through their contact page.
Sneaky The Library Cat Series
Debbie de Louise writes about Sneaky and his adventures, in the cosy mystery genre. Her books are a great blend of cat adventure and human mystery solving.
- At the time of writing you can grab Sneaky’s novella FREE and meet the characters of Cobble Cove. A free sneaky peek at cat books is always a bonus – right?
My Dog: The Paradox: A Lovable Discourse About Man’s Best Friend
Format: Kindle and Hardback
Epic dog love in this much loved book by The Oatmeal’s Matthew Inman. You will giggle at what a dog fears and what he doesn’t, and when they apologise to you!
In My Dog: The Paradox, Inman discusses the canine penchant for rolling in horse droppings, chasing large animals four times their size, and acting recklessly enthusiastic through the entirety of their impulsive, lovable lives. Hilarious and heartfelt, My Dog: The Paradox eloquently illustrates the complicated relationship between man and dog.
Bookmobile Cat Adventures
Format: Ebook and Paperback
This is a series I am a big fan of. The stories are a good length (not too short) and the characters are ones you will love, including Eddie the mobile library cat himself. I love the idea of a mobile library travelling from place t place dispensing books and adventure along the way.
Eddie followed Minnie home one day, and now she can’t seem to shake the furry little shadow. But in spite of her efforts to contain her new pal, the tabby sneaks out and trails her all the way to the bookmobile on its maiden voyage. Before she knows it, her slinky stowaway becomes her cat co-pilot!
The Great Purr
Format: Kindle and Paperback
This visionary fantasy by Catherine Holm is one I bought while I was in America several years ago. I re-read it every year because it is stunning. If you need cat heroes, hope and redemption you will find them here by the armful.
Don’t miss this book.
In a northern Minnesota mining town, cats have always maintained the Great Purr, a force that holds the Real World, the UnderEarth, and the Spirit World together. But when the Great Purr becomes corrupted and threatens to destroy the world, the magical cats of Ironton must work together to prevent disaster.
Pet Blogging for Love and Money
Format Kindle and Paperback
A bit unusual for a pet lovers gift guide, this book’s sub title is ‘How to Build, Grow, & Sustain a Profitable Pet Blog and Social Media‘ and it is perfect for aspiring writers and bloggers wanting to give themselves an edge when launching or improving a blog.
Books for Pet Lovers Summary
All of the books I have chosen are all unique or special in some way. These are individual writers who would love to see their books under the Christmas tree. They may sell via Amazon, or through a bookshop but you can gift these books knowing you support a hard working writer.
Desperate for a last minute solution? That Amazon gift card might get them the book they need, just don’t forget to send them here for the best recommendations!
- If you can get hold of a copy of the book Buster’s Winter Folly, by Kristin Schumacher, please grab it. It’s a delightful children’s book created with a Kickstarter campaign and it tells a lovely kitty ‘lost and found’ story.
Have you got a terrific author who I might have missed, let me know in the comments. I am keen to add some more quality content to this post!
