Dictionary Day

Dictionary Day with Dash Kitten

Recently we celebrated Dictionary Day, and I know you are asking – why the heck would we do THAT!

Mum teaches adult literacy so she wants to spotlight one of the most important books you will ever use, whichever language you read and write in – The Dictionary. Either online or as an always available paper copy – the dictionary needs its day!

Did you know words have a story, a history? A dictionary allows you to see the life of a word as well as learn the correct way to pronounce it. Some words are hundreds and some are thousands of years old and a dictionary will tell you it’s root, and how it may have changed or transformed along the way.

We review books for the blog and know that reading, and words, and dictionaries are vitally important for everyone. Imagine not being able to read the books we are going to tell you about! Imagine not spelling things properly in your own language, no cat mysteries, no Harry Potter, no library cat books! Stories play a bit part in our lives, and reading them has a special magic.

Dictionary Day tips:-

  1. Know and use proper Alphabetical order – it will help navigate to the right place!
  2. If at first you don’t find it, keep trying – a word may have several different spellings.
  3. A word may have several meanings, check each one to make sure you choose the right one.
  4. Try to read the word out loud using the pronunciation key. A word might not sound as you think it does!
  5. Never be afraid to ask if you are unsure of a spelling.

OK Guys, so where in the house if your family dictionary?
