Tonk ‘n Movies Catching Up

Tonk ‘n Movies is back! Howdy everyone!

I know I haven’t written in awhile and that’s for personal reasons and I might write again but instead of one movie per review perhaps one or two per review or something like that.

To recap what I’ve seen since we’ve last….uhh….well, whatever the appropriate verb is it escapes me…..*

Dash Kitten Owen Tonk 'N Movies

Straight Outta Compton – Excellent movie. Lots of energy and great lead performances, O’Shea Jackson and Jason Mitchell were stand outs. A snapshot of the time when Hip Hop music and censorship exploded onto the scene. If you’re into music history I recommend checking it.

Black Mass – Johnny Depp showed he can still do serious film when he wants to and Joel Edgerton hung with him every step of the way. Film loses some luster when Depp/Edgerton aren’t on screen. Was disappointed overall in this.

Pawn Sacrifice – Loved this. Tobey Maguire captures Bobby Fischer’ mania perfectly. Liev Schreiber as Boris Spassky stands out as well. It takes the game of Chess and turns into a dramatic sport. Recommended.

The Martian – Loved this movie! True to the book except for the ending for my fellow book nerds but it does not ruin it, a rare feat. As you know I like it better when a movie stays true to the source but in this instance I will make an exception. Cast was excellent as well. Recommended.

The Walk – Loved this one too! Joseph Gordon-Levitt is very very underated as an actor. I have become a true believer in him. He plays Philippe Petit who walked a high wire between the Twin Towers of New York. It’s essentially a non violent caper film and also a beautiful love letter to NYC. Recommended.

Spectre – Very disappointed in this film. Very long and directionless. I enjoyed the last 2 Bond films, Casion Royale was meh, but this was just boring. I would only watch again if it was on TV and that’s a big IF. Christoph Waltz was the film’s only saving grace.

The 33 – Liked, not loved, this film. Very inspiring. Performances was above average but bring tissues. I would rent it or see it at the theater after its been out for a few weeks.

Spotlight – Loved this film! Mark Ruffalo was the stand out but there wasn’t a weak performance in the bunch. Solid tight focused film and great editing job. Best film I’ve seen this year. Highest recommendation.

Creed – Loved this one too! Michael B Jordan is a star in the making and does an excellent job as Apollo Creed’s son Adonis Creed. Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa always does a good job as Rocky and this is no exception. When you start cheering for a fictional character then well you’ve done a heck of a job making a movie. I recommend seeing this and Spotlight ASAP.

  1. Great roundup, Owen! We saw a few of those movies, and we agree with most of your reviews. “Straight Outta Compton” was one of our favorites, too. I grew up in Los Angeles when all of that was going down – in the town right next to Compton. So I definitely remember!

  2. Wow, you see a lot of movies. Mom hasn’t seen any of those on your list but really wants to see the Martian. She’s not sure it’s still around. Thanks for telling us a bit about each of these.
