People often ask us about the Windy Wellington sign

It is Wellington New Zealand’s own version of the famous Hollywood sign, which is also perched on a hill and can seen from far away.

The Wellington weather sign location has, in the past, supported the ALL BLACKS during the Rugby World Cup, and WELLYWOOD to celebrate the city’s contribution to The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings films.

A competition was held to find a more permanent sign and several entries submitted to celebrate the world’s windiest city. The Windy Wellington Sign was an overwhelming winner! Sadly, I can’t find a good record of all the submitted entries, but I will keep looking. If you find one let me know and I am happy to link to it.

The Windy Wellington Sign Location

The sign is visible across the bay from Wellington city, and you can imagine how the famous winds that blow through Wellington sweep part of the sign away into the sky!  The sign is in the suburb of Miramar, and sits near the top of the hill facing to the airport.  It is a familiar sight to travellers going to or from the airport. It is just past the new ASB Sports Stadium.
