You will NOT be seeing us much on Facebook for the time being. Why? In spite of it being a valuable part of any bloggers way of increasing hits, circulation; a way of reaching out to their friends and family; a common bond for many people and a source of fun and joy – Facebook has gone too far and many people are distressed – many pet lovers, and pet owners.

Attached to this link to an online newspaper article reporting on a video of a kitten being set ‘doused in petrol and set alight’  which Facebook says “does not breach any Facebook guidelines“.   We appeal to Facebook to reconsider – this may be a criminal offence.

  • Make sure Facebook knows you are concerned – use their feedback form.
  • Spread the word to your local media – online and paper newspapers.
  • Keep up the pressure by spreading the MailOnline article on social media.
  • Contact the shareholders and express your concern and distress – be polite and reasonable.

Facebook states : “Facebook has long been a place where people turn to share their experiences and raise awareness about issues important to them. Sometimes, those experiences and issues involve graphic content that is of public interest or concern, such as human rights abuses or acts of terrorism. In many instances, when people share this type of content, it is to condemn it. However, graphic images shared for sadistic effect or to celebrate or glorify violence have no place on our site

So, murdering a small kitten, making its final moments on this earth utterly and agonisingly distressing does not count as “graphic images shared for sadistic effect….” I would beg to differ with Facebook. This is desperately upsetting. We recommend our colleague Beagle who has great advice to compliment our post.

We have to think long and hard about the time we spend there – we know some good hard working folks, people we respect, who work hard for animals, Facebook may eventually take down the distressing video but we hope you can respect our decision to take a time out.

We are not on Facebook, and yet again it proves to be a wise dicision. I would not even want to see the video. Just utterly horrible – it sounds to me. Animal torture leads to serial killing in a lot of cases. Those hoomans who set the kitten on fire should not only be put behind bars, because they tortured an animal, but also because they are DANGER to Society.

Hmmmm, and yet while FB won’t take down this sadistic video, they’re doing another sweep and getting rid of more anipal accounts. This is totally bizarre. I wonder if FB took down video of those Americans being beheaded by ISIS. I bet they did. I try to separate myself from getting too worked up otherwise we wouldn’t be able to shop or eat anywhere since we’re finding out that all the big stores and restaurant chains are run by idiots who either don’t give their workers a living wage, health care or both. If we were to boycot all the idiots, we’d be cutting ourselves off from the world. I bet if you look hard enother, you can find idiots using WordPress to brag about animal cruelty also.

There was an article a couple years ago about what happens when you report something as a violation of FB TOS. It goes to a very low-paid outsourced worker in the third world who evaluates whether it meets community standards or not. The article (including a cheat sheet provided to the outsourced workers) is here, if anyone is curious.

This brings up the question whether third-world animal cruelty standards are being used to decide what is cruel and what isn’t. (Though someone doing this is unfathomably cruel and how anyone can’t see it is unbelievable.)

What’s baffling is that people have been suspended from FB from jealous competitors organizing “reporting parties” and having many people report them for violations of TOS, yet enough reports of this aren’t getting any action. Something is very, very wrong.

I was very upset to see that Facebook refused to take down this video. I’m wondering if there is a Facebook page devoted to appealing their decision. This has happened before when there has been a horrible video that Facebook didn’t take down.

I will not watch the video but read the article describing it and cannot stop thinking about it. I just can’t imagine why such cruelty and horror is allowed to go on. It’s unfathomable.
