Blogging Courtesy is an important part of our online writing lives. We know that plenty of pet bloggers rock the blogosphere, and are a huge a support to each other, promoting relevant posts, tweeting about a really good blog story or an awesome giveaway.

We put together some quick ‘n dirty courtesy tips, thinking we ‘do as we would be done by’.

Some Do’s and Dont’s of Blogging Courtesy

  • Go to blogs, don’t expect them to come to you.
  • Visit fellow bloggers when you can, but don’t beat yourself up if you can’t visit every day. Pals blog when they can snatch a moment, their time is limited. Remember this.
  • If you get comments regularly from a blogger – return the compliment. This support is your blogging lifeblood cherish it.
  • If you DO comment regularly but do not have the compliment returned over time, quietly move on. Yes, people are busy, but even the blogosphere’s première bloggers find time to return the courtesy once in a while.
  • If you come across a blog you don’t visit regularly but like a post, say so. You may not follow on a regular basis but giving due credit for a well written, thoughtful  or fun post gives a real boost 🙂
  • Finally, BE NICE. If you disagree with a blog post and feel you must comment, be courteous. What you write is public and remains so. Your online reputation should be above discourtesy or argument, regardless of a post’s subject matter.

What do you think? Is my list one you would agree with? What would YOU add to the list?

Your list is absolutely perfect – to the point, practical and REALISTIC! Before I decided to quit completely – and I got closer to it than I ever would have imagined – I decided to stay, chill out, have fun with it, and quit worrying about all the “rules” that have made me miserable. It’s working for me and follows much of what you wrote. Thank you!

I try to do all you wrote above, and I can agree with all of that. But blogging and visiting blogs must remain fun, not an obligation : not everyone is able to comment or post every day, and we don’t have to feel guilty for it. So many wonderful blogs like yours, and so little time to visit them all…. Purrs, Zorro

  6. I agree! It’s not just good manners; visiting other blogs is a great way to meet other awesome bloggers and learn a thing or two.

I can agree with all of that. But I also agree with the blogging without obligation thing where you shouldnt feel guilty for not being able to comment or even post every day. There are SO many blogs out there, you can’t possibly be expected to read and comment on every one every day. It would be a full time job, lol!
I would add to not fall into negativity. Doing many many blogs where you get upset about some comment someone made can get tiresome and makes people not want to read. If a comment bothers you that much, delete it, don’t spread the hate, know what I mean?

We agree fully with what you said! I think most of read more than we can possibly comment on. But I do try to at least a few times each week to leave comments for everyone who leaves a comment for me. I think everyone puts effort into their blogs and it should be rewarded if you will with notice from the readers. I think we all enjoy getting feedback. I also agree about being polite and considerate. I find for myself only if I do disagree with something I just keep it to myself. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. We all do this for “fun” and relaxation and to share the love we have of our kitties/woofies with others who feel the same.

We agree 1,000%!! And Katie’s right – our mom’s work (and sometimes, like right now, life situations such as parents who are ill and needing care) can really hinder visits. But we sure do visit and comment whenever we can. It’s just what you do when you have such great friends in the blogosphere. Period!

That is a pawsome list, Silver. We read lots of pet blogs but often the mom staff is on the run and waiting for another hoomin so her comments are not frequent. Yes, we go to them, and until the mom staff gets her blog up and running she just reads and enjoys them all. Thanks for fabulous newsy items and all the wonderful pictures from Middle Earth.

Great post! We read much more than we comment, because the head peep can read posts on her phone when she has a free moment in the grocery store line, etc. Finding the balance in order to build community without it absorbing all of your time is tough!

Excellent advice Silver. I am, personally, a failure at being able to leave comments consistently, even for those who visit me regularly. I do try to catch up with them so they know I notice. But I have stopped trying to excuse myself. I simply have a life I live and I love my blog but it is not my life. I can always find another way to exercise my love of writing. I may even blog, with no followers…at least I still am telling my recovery story…one paw forward…slowly, slowly…paw hugs, Savvy

Miss Savvy Well Said. Balance is impawtant for commenting. Maybe you can only comment once a week, but its quality not quantity that counts. Mum loves your bloggy!

I love these tips! That is how I do things myself. A couple of weeks ago, my human was very ill with some stomach bug and she was too sick to to help me do ANY commenting on blogs. In fact, she was so sick she didn’t even feel guilty! So we were both pleased when she got well enough to get back in action and saw that everyone hung in there with her and I did not lose much traffic. That is because we have worked really hard to establish a community with the very steps you mentioned.

I completely agree and too, you never know what a blogger may be going through on a personal basis. I have had to ask pardon on Katie’s blog for not being the visitor I/she was, and I only said things were needing my undivided attention. That has gone on for two years. I was more open about it here recently when I said one of my children had an illness. I was so appreciative of the love and care that Katie’s furriends gave her (and me) though we were absent too much.
