Dash Kitten In Memoriam

Dash Candles Were Here

Friends, my heart breaks. Today our beloved boy Dash passed away after being mauled by two dogs.  My boy, who loved the outdoors, the sunshine, who didn’t mind having suncream or Filtabac on his ears when he went out in the sun, who yelled like crazy when it was dinner time. My boy is gone. My boy who we believed no-one else would want because he had micro-ophthalmia, our local vet could not save him.

A neighbour across the back investigated the noise he heard and found Dash, he rushed him down to the vet but he was too late. We are in shock. There is a weight on my heart – only last week we wrote about losing Jami, Homer and friend Smokey8.

Dash and I are so proud of his blogging achievements, our daily strike rate has continued to climb with each passing week, and we do not want to lose our friends. Miranda may be waiting in the wings, and take over after a period of mourning. Please, friends – my grief knows no bounds I can write to more.

One Year On

Google Reaer is Gone!

A year ago today September the 6th 2013 (New Zealand time) we lost our beloved Founder Cat – Dash Kitten. International Pet Blogger and awesome, wonderful cat. His loss is one we are still coming to terms with and we take a moment today to honour our Best Boy.

Our Treasured Blog Rescue logo by Glogirly.com

We will take our inspiration for the tenor of our post from our mentor and friend Sparkle who passed away in August. She did not want people to mourn, she wished her friends to celebrate her life. So we will look for the blessings Dash’s blog has brought to us since it was founded in February 2012.

Our marvellous Dash Kitten Blanket created by a host of crafty friends co-ordinated by @NewtTheCat

Dash was a hero to many, a popular kitty on Twitter and keen fundraiser and enthusiastic helper at the fundraisers taking place; he threw himself into everything with gusto. He was a partially sighted rescue kitten who’s zest for life was legendary to those who knew him locally. Knowing his own good fortune he committed to help others as much as he could – he counted his blessings daily.

Friend Brian Frum honoured Dash when he helped the Cuteheads with a memorial run.

#TheAviators #Angels @MundarePeggy All are welcome to join us.

** Good Things from Dash **

  • The support from friends since Dash passed has been immense. Their patience is ongoing. Even now, a year later, a friend will give encouragement with we falter. They never say get over it or move on. They simply offer love and encouragement.
  • People read our blog posts – they share, they comment – it keeps us going, and we continue to improve!
  • Our AnimalSOS posts are given attention on Google+, Twitter and FB thanks to our supporters, how lucky we are!
  • We are inspired through International Pet Blogging Month by our fellow pet bloggers and friends – without Dash and the blog, our lives would not be as rich and full of joy as they are.
  • The cards people sent about Dash are still hung on ribbons on our wall – they mean a lot to us. They make us smile that our boy was so loved.
  • We kept a page of the wonderful memorial images created by friends for Dash – they are lovely!
  • We have never forgotten the comment made by a friend, in our blog post announcing the blog would continue, that it was taking a team to replace Dash Kitten. It made us smile more than anything 🙂

UPDATE: I was not going to touch this post again, but the response and outpouring of grief for Dash has been so overwhelming that I am humbled at the impact he has made on the blogging and Twittersphere. We thought we just tweeted, appealed and harried people until they gave in. It turns out he had the respect of hundreds, if not thousands of friends who appreciated his work, and the help he gave. I tried to take down all the candle messages but they keep moving.

Today I learned that dear @NikePurrfektcat had started a brief  YouCaring appeal in Dash’s memory for a rescue we nominated, she did it as a surprise and – I was stunned at the response of so many.

We are profoundly grateful for the gracious blog post tributes from our fellow cat bloggers Glogirly, Sparklecat, MariodaCat, CathyKeisha, Texas. How can we ever thank you for your immense support as this terrible time, your comments, and your deep love and support.

Miranda is tugging at my sleeve asking when her next pet shopping post goes up – I told her we need to take a breath, but we hope to be back to help others, one day.

Thank you for joining us today.

  2. Marjorie, words do not always help, but you have plenty of them everywhere from which to find solace for Dash’s passing. And he did ‘pass’…he did not go away…Dash is living in your heart, mind and all our collective hearts and minds…his presence will endure the march of time…you’ll see…purromise…Savannah says “luvluvluv you” Miss Marjorie…and so do I…you are an inspiration to me, my writing and Dash will continue to give encouragement to Savvy

It leaves such a huge empty space in your heart that can never be filled, just pushed to the background after a time. I cry with you. Dash was always there first to help all other anipals. He was my example of a loving heart. I will miss him so much. I send you many comforting purrrrrrrrrrrrrrs.

  48. Dear Marjorie, I can well imagine what you are going through having lost my sweet Smokey a week ago yesterday. Every time one of our furbabies crosses over the Bridge, we cry and mourn and are left asunder. But there is a special gut wrenching sadness that occurs when our babies, through no fault of their own, leave us in such sad and horrific way. We don,t get a chance to save them, we don’t get a chance to hold them one last time and say, “Until me we meet again.” Please take it one day at a time, take comfort and some solace in all the tributes that will be paid to Dash. In the meantime, I send you all my love and I will be praying for you. Sincerely, Tessie (@Smokey8’s Mom)

Dash in the meantime will be playing with all his pals at the Rainbow Bridge without a care until you meet again.

There are things you simply can not foresee. How many times was Dash out and about and was just fine. If not for those dogs he would still be with you. Guilt almost always accompanies grief, and with the circumstances I am sure it is full force. I hope you are able to let go of that guilt and not let it fester.

  92. Marjorie – you and Dash have been such so kind and compassionate with us as we travel down our Grief journey with our beloved Abby, now I wish to offer you the same in return. I want you to feel free at any time to contact me ManxMnewsATgmailDOTcom about anything. I am so very sorry for the loss of your beloved Dash and can empathize so deeply with the shock and disbelief and sadness you are experiencing. Please know that you did nothing wrong, things beyond your control happened, you are not to blame. Dash would not want you to hold yourself in a state of guilt or blame for this. Dash is now wearing his brightly colored angel wings and Abby was there to greet him as he crossed to the Bridge among his multiple friends who were also there to champion his arrival. The Days ahead will be hard, I will not sugar coat that for you. But know we are all here for you. Dash will always, ALWAYS be with you. Love never dies and like myself you will form a new relationship with Dash it will be a spiritual one that will be as deep as the one you two shared while he was here on this earth. Dash is now free. He has another journey to go on, and you do as well. I will keep you deeply in my prayers and know that I am thinking of you and when I light my candles as I do each evening for Abby, I will light one in honor of Dash.

  126. So sad to hear this devastating news. It is one of the fears of mine, besides fire, of my cats getting out and being attacked by dogs. So sorry to know this has happened to Dash and to you…many regrets and many tears so difficult to get through. They depend on us to protect them and when we fail, we wish we could go back in time and change what happened. Yes, if Dash had been an indoor only cat, this wouldn’t have had the chance to happen and I think that will be the most difficult part of this tragedy for you to get past. For now, be like a cat…take comfort in your cat companions and your friends and know we all feel your sorrow, too…

Friend, please don’t mourn for me,
I’m still here, though you don’t see.
I’m right by your side each night and day,
And within your heart I long to stay.

My body is gone but I’m always near,
I’m everything you feel, see or hear.
My spirit is free, but I’ll never depart,
As long as you keep me alive in your heart.

None of us can imagine the pain you as a family and personally are feeling just now – know that Dash was (and forever will be) loved by so many via all his and your good works. His personality was a shining light to so many via his Blog, Twitter and Facebook. A true gentlman cat and exceptional barktender who loved “smooching” the girls and shaking paws with the boys. He will be in your heart and ours forever.
