We were asked recently ‘can you blog and work full-time’ as well – a good question for busy folks who want to build a blog.  A good question for those who are keen to get online, or create an online presence, but who need to pay the bills too!

A full-time job will take a lot of your day, but if you are organised and can use the time you have available, there is no reason why you can’t build a good reputation as a blogger with quality content with a limited ‘time budget’. You can blog and work full-time.

Dash Kitten Advice Post

How Much Can You Blog While Working?

Unless you want to start losing your quality of life, and sleep, work out how many posts you have time for. One a week is fine.

If you worry it’s not enough and feel you want to add more to your blog, add something visual like a Sunday Selfie, or a Wordless Wednesday post. Remember, quality matters while you are building content.

I Can Only blog Once a Week!

Not a bad idea! Five weeks = five quality posts = stuff people will want to read. Find your ‘why’ – this will inspire your content. Build a body of good work. Google likes ‘good content’ and so do your readers.

  • NOTE Our blogging colleague Erin the Cat Princess blogs once a week. This did not stop her achieving a Finalist place in the BlogPaws® 2016 Nose to Nose Awards.

Five Steps to Blogging Success While You Are Working

We will work on the basis you plan to blog once a week but this works for any number, just take it easy to start with!

What is your GOAL for this week?

Is it a blog post (text), a photo essay, a How To with video? Make your decision, so you can make your plan.

Work out WHEN you will get your work done

Can you only work at home for an hour each evening? Research material online while commuting on the train or bus? Have you got half an hour over lunch?

  • Find those chunks of time and use them.

Break your goal into achievable bite-sized chunks

Plan how you will try to use the time you have available. Here’s an example

  1. Research and draft ideas for post (2 days)
  2. Research for post (1 day)
  3. Source and edit images or video (2 days)
  4.  Write/Schedule post (2 days)
  5. Plan your promotion to spread the word – announce it on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr or Instagram!

Use the media and equipment at your disposal

Can you use your smartphone, or a really cool notebook to jot down ideas ‘on the fly’.
Upload ‘phone notes to Evernote, or Trello, for use later.
Can you use your laptop/iPad in your lunch break to write, or edit pictures/video?
For editing movies on your smartphone, we have editing tips here, and smartphone editing apps here.

  • One task at a time,
  • One step at a time,
  • Get the blog post done,
  • and this will keep you on track to enjoy your blogging adventure.

Remember – Never Give Up!

Sometimes things just won’t work out – life happens! A post is late going up, an image isn’t quite right, but don’t stress. The important thing is not to beat yourself up about falling off the ‘blogging wagon’. Pick yourself up and climb back on!

That one good blog post a week will slowly grow your blog into something you can, and will, be proud of!

OK go do it. Now, if you have time – read some of the inspiring comments, different people, different ideas – all relevant to you the blogger.

  1. Deb Barnes - Zee and Zoey

It’s all about perspective, compromise, and being kind to yourself. I can barely blog once a week now due to my day job and other commitments. I wish I could do more and I used to wear myself out to a frazzle trying to do more, but I have learned that I just have to accept that it’s not humanly possible and that it’s okay. Once you allow yourself the mental permission that it’s okay to cut down on the blogging, then, as you say, you can concentrate more on a few key posts throughout the weeks and months.

Those are great tips. Translating takes time, we would not be able to blog more than what we actually do. Purrs

It can easily get overwhelming … bloggers have to be jack/jills-of-all-trades … keep SEO, readership and engagement in mind … it feels like one could blog 24/7 and still not accomplish all one would like to. That’s been the hardest part for Bear and I. Every minute I spend blogging is one fewer minute he gets … and I have to remind myself of that too 🙂

Well said, Silver! We work full time, volunteer weekends at the shelter, and post 2-3 times/week. Since we are posting about the adoptable cats, with the intention of getting each one some additional exposure, having each post up for 2-3 days is actually better than a new one daily. We also try to comment on other blogs as much as possible. 🙂

This is a great and re-assuring post. Thank you for sharing it. I had tried and tried to blog more frequently but work and responsibilities outside of work have kept me from doing so. It is nice to feel that the pressure is not there to do so, and that I have some worth doing a single blog a week. The pointers in your post are so useful for me even now, so for someone starting out it is invaluable to know it can be done. Another all paws up for you Miranda.

We are once a weekers, in the Sunday selfie category. We just blog for pleasure, and as a sort of ‘diary’ of our life’s doings and that of our furmily.

And our petcretary works part time, though its a hard labor she does there…and then she has many chores to accomplish at home. Pawppy works full time and doesn’t have a lot of time to help too much. Though he does love us furry ones.

I worked a 12 hour shift rotation, days and midnights, with 16 hour shifts many times as overtime yet @AdmiralHestorb tweeted and she blogged most days of the week. I had a personal blog and Twitter account too and added to those every day. It can be done. Just know what you want to say, sit down and do it. I did that for years under the worst of time constraints because I enjoyed blogging..or Admiral did. Katie too.
