Howdy everyone welcome to Tonk N Oscars 2016! Like my granny use to say when we sat down to eat and she wanted to keep it short and sweet – Rub a dub dub Let’s eat some grub!

The Tonk’n Movies Mini-Reviews

Carol – A love story set in the 1950’s starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. Very well acted film. Both leads did an excellent job and had chemistry. Thought all the performaces were great. A shout out to a personal favorite Sarah Paulson – she’s also knocking it out of the park on The People Vs. O.J. Simpson. Based on the novel “The Price of Salt“. Recommended

Deadpool – Loved it! Exactly what a Deadpool movie should be, cast was perfect, the way he was in the comics he was the exact same way in the film, and for a first time director Tim Miller did an excellent job. Recommended.

Eddie The Eagle – A lil cliche but the movie was still excellent. I went to see to cuz I wanted something uplifting and fun and this hit the spot! There was a bit of fudging the truth,as sometimes happens some characters were fictional but it worked so I’m not upset. Loved the 80’s feel it had and the 80’s soundtrack as well. If you looking for something light and fun this is it. Recommended.

#OscarsSoWhite

I know some people aren’t happy with the Academy for having all the major acting awards be all white performers and it sucks, because from other awards shows and word of mouth there were some people left out (Idris Elba, Will Smith, Jason Mitchell, O’Shea Jackson Jr come to mind for me).  When your organization is mostly older white males, well, this is what happens.

I’m not standing up for it but they’re not gonna have an interest in Beasts Of No Nation or Straight Outta Compton (review here) and so they will get overlooked. They’re probably gonna fall back on the names they recognize from movies they’ve seen and thus you get the list of the same ‘ole same ole nominess and a token nomination like Straight Outta Compton got. It sucks but its reality. Diversify the Academy and you’ll start seeing diversified nominees.

Oscars 2016 Predictions

Best Picture

The Big Short
Bridge Of Spies
Brooklyn
Mad Max: Fury Road (!)
The Martian
The Revenant
Room
Spotlight

My Pick – Honestly too close to call for the Oscars 2016. My top three are Mad Max, Revenant, and Spotlight. I can make a case for any one of them. They are all strong candidates, and if the Academy released results I wouldn’t be surprised if these three were the top three. Thinking hard about it……I’ll vote for The Revenant. Mad Max was a fun ride and Spotlight was excellent acting and good storytelling. The Revenant though was an experience, and it just felt alive. As much as I loved Mad Max (secretly pulling for it to win due to the other two splitting votes…well not secretly anymore) I feel as The Revenant is better film overall.

Will Win – I honestly couldn’t tell you this either. Producer’s Guild and Writer’s Guild gave their top awards to The Big Short. The Screen Actor’s Guild and Writer’s Guild gave their top awards to Spotlight (Writer’s Guild has two separate writing categories). Director’s Guild gave their top award to The Revenant. I think The Revenant has the most momentum at this point so I’ll say that wins but wouldn’t surprise me to see Spotlight win it either.

Best Director

Adam McKay – The Big Short
George Miller – Mad Max: Fury Road
Alejandro G. Inarritu – The Revenant
Lenny Abrahamson – Room
Tom McCarthy – Spotlight

My pick and predicted winner – Inarritu. He won the DGA already and a couple of others this season so he’s a shoe in at this point, and he’ll join John Ford and Joseph L. Mankiewicz as the only back to back winners of Best Director. If The Revenant wins Best Picture, he’ll be the only winner to win have his films win that award back to back and this as well. He deserves it, as like I’ve said before, this movie is more of an experience than just a film.

Best Actress

Cate Blanchett – Carol
Brie Lawson – Room
Jennifer Lawrence – Joy
Charlotte Rampling – 45 Years
Saoirse Ronan – Brooklyn

My Pick – Blanchett, as its the only film I’ve seen of this group. ::hangs head:: She was excellent though.

Will Win – Lawson, she’s won all the major acting awards this season already and seems like a shoe in for this as well. Keep an eye out for Lawrence though, the Academy seems to have a thing for her.

Best Actor

Bryan Cranston – Trumbo
Matt Damon – The Martian
Leonardo DiCaprio – The Revenant
Michael Fassbender – Steve Jobs
Eddie Redmayne – The Danish Girl

My pick and predicted winner – DiCaprio for Oscars 2016, he’s winning the awards left and right so he’s (say it with me!) a shoe-in. It’ll be his first and well deserved as he did a lot of solo acting in this film. Damon did as well and if DiCaprio wasn’t nominated I feel as though Damon would’ve won it this year. Why Fassbender is here is a mild surprise, he falls into the familiar name category to me a little bit. Not a bad actor but never heard a lot of buzz around him for this.

Best Supporting Actress

Jennifer Jason Leigh – The Hateful Eight
Rooney Mara – Carol
Rachel McAdams – Spotlight
Alicia Vikander – The Danish Girl
Kate Winselt – Steve Jobs

My Pick – Mara, I’ve seen 3 of these films (Carol, Hateful Eight, Spotlight) and she was the best of the three I saw. McAdams was OK and Leigh, while loving The Hateful Eight, thought she was slightly overrated. She did the get ugly deal, and though it was set in the 1880’s-ish, didn’t strike a cord with me. Mara was great as Blanchett’s love interest, a quietly powerful performance.

Will Win – Slight nod to Vikander. She’s been winning more lately but Winslet could be the sleeper here. She falls into the familiar name category too though.

Best Supporting Actor

Christian Bale – The Big Short
Tom Hardy – The Revenant
Mark Ruffalo – Spotlight
Mark Rylance – Bridge of Spies
Sylvester Stallone – Creed

My pick – Tough call between Ruffalo and Hardy here. I liked Stallone but ehhh I wasn’t crazy about it like everyone else. Could’ve replaced him with Idris Elba for Beasts Of No Nation and it wouldn’t have bothered me. Hate to be a The Revenant snob but I’d vote Hardy. Ruffalo was as good as he was, but Hardy sticks with me for some reason.

Will Win – I have a theory. For the SAG Awards, Stallone wasn’t even nominated. Actors vote on acting categories at the Oscars, will they flock to Stallone since the SAG winner (Elba) wasn’t even nominated? Maybe, maybe not, but there could be a surprise winner. Remember everyone thought Eddie Murphy was the sure winner was he was nominated and had previously won the SAG Award and he didn’t win the Oscar? (Though that might have been more of a backlash for some crappy film he put out around Oscar time). Playing off that theory I’ll be bold and pick an upset – Bale – but wouldn’t surprise me to see Stallone win it.

Tim miller is the new comic boy who according to me got it with the first shot and according to me, Deadpool deserves something – It went beyond my expectation.
    Cheers!

Well we don’t know these folks. Yeah we know we live unner a rock. By da time a movie makes it sumwhere we can see it, it’s old news. Altho’ we did find an app dat allowed us to watch a few new movies and we totally disagree wiff da Mad Max. We thought it was really bad. Mommy saw da furst one many years ago and sed it was purretty bad too. More like B rated and such. But alas, nopawdy’s askin’ our opinions and since we haven’t seen anythin’ good in a while, we’ll keep our eyes open. We’s gor a few free PPV right now we gotta use. Maybe we’ll see sumfin’ good wiff them. Enjoy da awards show.

    Luv ya’

well Owen you did not miss Spotlight. We saw many of the movies and it was truly a great year except for the white purity of all the nominees
