Welcome to a very tall Middle-Earth Monday! When you visit Whanganui this tower is easy to spot! The Durie Tower in Whanganui is a real treat for locals ans tourists alike with a cute vintage lift and the outstanding view.
The Durie Tower
You can find a brief history here. The tower is at the top of a lift built in 1919. The lift (elevator) is still used every day by local people and visiting tourists. People climb the tower and this is what they see……
The sweeping view from the top looks over the Whanganui River and the town itself beyond. The broad sweeping curves of the water seem to flow on forever, and at 290 kms/180 miles it is the third longest river in New Zealand. The river itself seems almost a living spiritual thing and people of many faiths and beliefs feel a resonance here. It is a special place for local Maori tribes (iwi).
Summer continues here in New Zealand, we hope our Northern Hemisphere readers don’t have it too cold or wet. When you visit Whanganui we hpe you enjoy it as much as we did!
