Dash Kitten Blog Mr Holmes Movie review

Owen went to see Mr Holmes, and as luck would have it we saw it almost at the same time. We were interested to read Owen’s take on the film, which we enjoyed very much. We remind you that Owen pays his way at the movies and his opinion is an honest one. He lets you know whether you will get your money’s worth from your movie!

Director:- Bill Condon

Starring:i Ian McKellen, Laura Linney, Hiroyuki Sanada, Milo Parker

The Plot

An aged, retired Sherlock Holmes looks back on his life, and grapples with an unsolved case involving a beautiful woman.

The film tells a story set in the twilight of Sherlock Holmes life after an incident, undisclosed at first, has him retire to Sussex to live out his days with his housekeeper Mrs. Munro and her son Roger. At the farm he attempts to write a “true” (when/if you see the film you’ll see what I mean) account of his final case and also another plot involving a visit to Japan.

This film reminds me of a great song. It moves at a lyrical pace. I admit I stole that thought from another critic because it aptly describes the pace, and this song turns out to be a great tune (second half of quote not stolen FYI!). Ian McKellen nails Sherlock Holmes. The chemistry with Laura Linney as Mrs. Munro and Milo Parker as her son Roger is excellent. They work well together and bounce off each like they’ve been together for awhile. In a way they are a family and it shows. In essence this is an actor’s film, and all the actors are great, and I include Hiroyuki Sanada despite his limited screen time compared to the others.

The current storyline and the two flash back sequences (one more recent, the other about Holmes’ last case) mesh well together and tie in beautifully. You won’t feel lost, and I like how all the storylines come together at the end. I will admit to being slightly lost for a minute but that was just me during a flashback sequence.

Watson does show up but not fully, and that’s my only gripe. Here’s a thought why not have Sir Patrick Stewart as Watson? I think that could be a cool casting considering their history even if Stewart’s only on screen for a little while.

The movie is more about Sherlock Holmes the man rather than the detective and any kind of mystery to be solved. We know the detective but do we understand the man?  This film addresses that, and McKellen is pitch perfect as Holmes. I admit to underestimating McKellen, but I now realize what a talented actor he is and this is a good showcase for his talents. Linney and Parker are great in their supporting roles as Holmes’ caretakers and I hope these get some recognition when awards season rolls around.

See It:- First Day – This is the best acted film of the year and since it’s essentially an actor’s showcase/character study puts it high on my list for the year. I admit to being a bit of Holmes’ nerd so take that as you will.

Rankings:- I can’t have a 3 way tie for first. I’m starting to cheat too much. Mad Max gets the nod because I loved it so much but Mr. Holmes is this close to it. I edge Mr. Holmes over MAEATDG (not typing the whole title, also does the movies initials essentially spell out MA EAT D(O)G?? An inside joke somewhere??) because Holmes was the better acted film. Mad Max gets the nod for being more overall enjoyable.

See you at the movies guys! Agreements/disgreements welcomed I can be found on Twitter – @OwenTheTonk and don’t forget to check my review Rankings under my avi!
