Max Mad Fury Road

Director of Mad Max Fury Road : George Miller. Starring: Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Keays-Bryne, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Riley Keough, Zoe Kravitz, Abbey Lee, Courtney Eaton

Ratings: See It First Day, First Week, In Theaters, At Home, Don’t Bother. I don’t see movies for free so ratings reflect if I felt I got my money’s worth.
Disclaimer – I am a huge Mad Max fan. I loved all the movies. So if you take this review with a grain of salt, so be it.

It’s been a while

In fact, it’s been 30 years since we last saw Mad Max – Does it still have wheels or has it fell off the road? OK the plot: Max Rockatansky aka Mad Max is captured by Immortan Joe’s War Boys and gets caught up in Imperator Furiosa’s plan to escape to the Green Place with Joe’s Wives.

Mad Max Fury Road is awesome. It has everything thing you expect from a Mad Max movie. The settings. The crazy characters with crazy names. The vehicles. The whole thing is just like the previous 3, and dare I say….better?

If I had to rank the prequels – Mad Max 2 (or The Road Warrior), Mad Max, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. Fury Road would be 2nd right now, but nudged right up against The Road Warrior. It is a 2 hour chase film, with some respite every now and them but they spent most of their time on wheels. The action is insane, as is befitting a Mad Max film. The plot is there but the dialogue is sparse, most communication is done with a sentence or two, and there isn’t a monologue to be heard throughout the film. I’d be willing to bet no character had more than 100 words of dialogue. Heck the whole move might have had barely that.

Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) begins the film being chased by the War Boys and brought to the Citadel, the base of operations for Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne). He is imprisoned there while Joe sends Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) to Gas Town and the Bullet Farm to reload for supplies. Furiosa instead has a plan of her own and Max gets caught up in the conflict.

.
I love the names and settings of this film. I don’t know how George Miller comes up with them but I imagine a dart board and some alcohol is involved. I won’t give away spoilers but Max’s motivations in this film is the same as the previous two, he’s out trying to survive in this world and gets caught up in someone else’s mess.

He basically wants to get what he needs and move on but somehow always finds himself involved in something. One thing leads to another and Max is having another adventure with the craziness of the world he he now inhabits. What makes Mad Max: Fury Road stand out is the action. Don’t come in expecting anything more than balls to the wall action. Most of the effects for this film are practical instead of special, and it adds to the film. This is the best action movie I seen since Die Hard With A Vengence. Tom Hardy does a great job as Max. He has the brooding down pat, he speaks without saying anything, and does a good job carrying the Mad Max legacy.

Summary of Mad Max Fury Road

If you’re coming for some escapist fun, this is the movie for you, BUT here’s the thing – it’s got a feminist bend to it. Not just from Charlize Theron having a major role, but from Immortan Joe’s Five Wives (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Riley Keough, Zoe Kraavitz, Abbey Lee, Courtney Eaton) that she is trying to bring to the Green Place – an area not affect by what has happened to the rest of the world,  and the clan of woman who now occupy the Green Place. This group of 12ish woman fight back against Immortan Joe’s army along with Max and former War Boy Nux (Nicholas Hoult) in an attempt to return to the Citadel and topple Immortan Joe.

Think about that for a moment – you come in expecting only a blast of testosterone but get some oestrogen as well. These women more than hold their own as they battle to return to the Citadel. Max may be the star but all the women shine in this film, they’re not there strictly as eye candy, but as strong woman taking their lives into their own hands to escape the clutches of Immortan Joe. Has Miller secretly made Mad Max an action chick flick?
This is my favorite movie of the year so far. No it’s not gonna sweep the Academy Awards but its the most fun I’ve had at the theater so far this year. Mad Max is back and it’s been too long since we last saw him!

Mad Max Fury Road

Quick Thoughts on Mad Max Fury Road:
1) Immortan Joe. Imperator Furiosa. Rictus Erectus. The Bullet Farmer. The Organic Mechanic. And so on – the names alone are great!
2) I have no idea chronologically where this movie falls. Mad Max films seems to have a loose chronology. In a way each film is a kind of a stand alone in a series. None of them really connect to the other.
3) No Bruce Spence! Boo! I dug him in the previous films.
4) The car designs are insane!
5) SPOILER (Kinda) –  I heard rumors of a Mel Gibson cameo but alas there is none.
6) SPOILER – Not a major spoiler but one of the vehicles has 6 drummers constantly playing during the chase sequences and a guitar player whose guitar shoots flames out of it! I love these crazy designs he comes up with for these characters!

Rating: See It First Day – Yes, make an effort to see this as soon as possible. It’s full of fun, excitement, and action. You’ll get to see what Mad Max does best – crazy settings, characters, and action sequences. You won’t be disappointed.

Year To Date Movie Rankings:
1) Mad Max: Fury Road
2) Ex Machine
3) Avengers: Age Of Ultron
4) Chappie
5) Maggie

We were wondering about this one, so we really appreciate the review, Owen! No Bruce Spence? What a pity … his character is GREAT. But the movie does sound like a good time!
