People often ask us about the Windy Wellington sign.

Windy Wellington Sign

It is Wellington’s own version of the famous Hollywood sign, which is also perched on a hill and can seen from far away. The windy Wellington sign location has, in the past, supported the ALL BLACKS during the Rugby World Cup, and WELLYWOOD to celebrate the city’s contribution to The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings films.

A competition was held to find a more permanent sign and several entries submitted. The Windy Wellington Sign was an overwhelming winner! Sadly, I can’t find a good record of all the submitted entries.

The Windy Wellington Sign Location

The sign is visible across the bay, and you see how the famous winds that blow through Wellington sweeps part of the sign away into the sky!  The sign is in the suburb of Miramar, and sits near the top of the hill facing the road travellers use to reach the airport from Wellington. It is just past the new ASB Sports Stadium.

  • Finally, it’s good to be back guys, thank you for all your kind wishes for my recovery. I am now cone free, cuddling at night with mum and my scars are healing well. My final surgery and record update is online for those who may encounter similar issues.
