You only need to know a few essential tricks blog at your best. We found this by doing a more general blog hop, one that was outside our usual online environment – the pet world.

Viewing other blogs covering everything from mompreneurs, faith blogs, and ‘how to’ blog posts, we discovered a common thread of things that every blogger should value, regardless of the blog’s subject matter.

Every Blog Should Be….

  • Readable
  • Presentable and,
  • Have Integrity

Essential Blogging Trick 1 – Readability

Unless your post is on a specific topic or your style is of a specific length, keep paragraphs clear and reasonably short. This makes them easier to read.. Reading online is different to a book – keep it concise and people will read to the end.

  • It’s a combination of personal style, post content and readability. Break the rules if it works for you!

Essential Blogging Trick 2 – Be Presentable

Display and format your images properly. Photographs usually only need to be 72dpi for blogs and online documents.  But one useful tip we learned was – start big and reduce your image size downwards. You can’t work in reverse because you lose all your image quality and things look rough! It is something we all constantly need to work at.

  • Here’s a useful and readable breakdown of things like dpi, and resolution.

Aim to make your text and images work well together.  Look at blogs you admire, how do they space and layout text and images? What appeals about their blog to you?

Essential Blogging Trick 3 – Have Integrity

Don’t rant.

A post written to present or oppose an idea, or a proposal, should have clear arguments, with quoted research and sources to backup your point of view. This will show you care enough to prepare a post well and argue your opinion with confidence and conviction.

Present yourself in a way that invites trust.

Essential Blogging Tricks. Blog with integrity

We found the blog hop fascinating and frustrating at the same time, but, we learned an huge amount and are looking at our own blog in a new light too!

This is great advice! There are a lot of rant-y type blogs around, but I like to think that pet bloggers hold themselves to a higher standard.

We found your post very interesting.
While on the same vein but a different aspect of it, we have found that in blog hops the ones participating do not visit. Isn’t that the point of a blog hop? We find that very discouraging.

Annbelle, yes, blog hoppers should, in our opinion return the favour. The Sunday Selfie has about 50 which we can visit All of over 2/3 days, but if there are 100+ like BlogPaws someone suggested visiting the three posts before your own.

Great advice! I know I tend to be long-winded, but will usually not read blogs that are too long. There is only so much time to read blogs.

No CK, we know your blog, you speak if you have a point to make or an ‘argument’ to propose – you blog with commitment and sense using the time and space it needs.

High paw! These are great guidelines. For the most part, pet blogs seem to be a really civil corner of the internet. The golden rule of the internet is “don’t read the comments” because of how bad it gets, and we can’t imagine reading cat blogs and not reading the comments, too!

This is all very good advice, but I’m not sure if I keep to it!! Will have to rethink! I agree that pet, especially cat, bloggers are the most polite and generous and helpful 🙂

Excellent advice! It is really important that bloggers learn how to effectively communicate using their blogs. We have so many important ideas! I agree that well stated points are much better than emotional rants.
