Bonjour Paris, and welcome to the Paris cat cafe where you will meet and mingle with the local kitty residents at Cafe des Chats in rue Michel le Comte, in the 3rd Arrondissment of the world’s most beautiful city, Paris.
We hope our report and pictures give you a flavour of the delights of Cafe des Chats. We have seen some real whiners abut the Cat Cafe, and read them with disbelief – this IS an amazing and welcoming cafe!
Welcome to le Cafe des Chats, Paris, France!
As you enter the reception area you seem almost to enter into a small house in a country town, with whitewashed stone walls, vintage furniture and friendly staff who make you feel welcome, as we found on our arrival. Reservations are recommended, and the cafe web site has a comprehensive reservations page. TIP: do a search for the cafe and have Google translate it for you!). We booked for an early supper as this would give us the chance for a nice light meal and plenty of time to see the cats.
The Cafe des Chats has two levels; the ground floor with an airy open quality and a view to a small pretty courtyard with the perfect seat for Bird TV, then, when you explore further, precipitous stairs lead down to a magical underground ‘library’ with a range of nooks, hidey holes, secret spaces, and plenty of cat visitors. This is relaxation in true Paris style!
Cats and Coffee, Cats and Lunch, in Paris
The menu is well cooked and delicious fare, inviting and easy to read (Menu – English). As we were greeted, and settled into our seats, we began to notice there were cats everywhere, relaxing on seats and cat trees, wandering around and stretching and, for us two, just sitting there surrounded by cats, in Paris, having supper was just the most exciting thing ever.
We realised that such a calm and reassuring environment in the Paris Cat Cafe. The cats could only be maintained by a set of quietly enforced rules, geared to ensure the cats safety and keep the humans on their best behaviour.
The cafe has also spent a lot of time and effort ensuring the Paris Cat Cafe environment meets the requirements of official health, safety and animal care.
Cafe des Chats says :-
- The cats are all strays who have been adopted and selected for their confident, outgoing personalities. They receive good vet care.
- Children under 12 must remain seated at the table with their parents. Children’s behaviour must be quiet and responsible.
- Do not feed the cats. (Please – Imagine your small tidbit multiplied by 50 times a day!) The cats get top quality kibble and have water fountains.
- Do not disturb a sleeping cat, there are plenty of ‘above human height’ levels for them to get peace and quiet, as well as the cat trees.
- Do not pick up the cats – they may, however, come and say hello, meow or sit on your lap.
As you can see, the cats interests and welfare are well looked after, so that people can sit and relax and enjoy a coffee, a full meal, or a snack in the company of happy, contented and well adjusted animals. One thing on the Cafe’s web page caught our eye and brought home the intentions of the owners… “For the selection of our cats priority is not the colour of their fur, their silky hair or blue of their eyes. We have only one criterion first choice: their future well-being at the café.”
