One of the prettiest places to find treasure and explore is Bourton on the Water. The buildings of local warm honey-gold stone are an essential part of the area known as The Cotswolds. Bourton often called the ‘Venice’ of the Cotswolds due to its wide bridges spanning the graceful River Windrush, conjuring an atmosphere of gracious and gentle peace.
In April, when Mum visited, it was Spring and drizzly! But no arguments from her, as this meant the large crowds that usually fill Bourton on the Water had vanished in the spring mist! As you can see from the brief video, this is a beautiful and well preserved village with a mix of practical local and artisan tourist focused shops that are delight to browse.
The Cotswolds area (approx. 790 sq miles) was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1966 and the landscape is filled with delightful stone-built villages, historical towns, and stately homes and gardens. Nearby Upper Slaughter is one of an handful of ‘Double Thankful‘ villages; due to all their then members of the armed forces surviving both World War I and World War II.
