It’s Family Friday here at DashKitten.com and it’s my turn to speak, because October is Adopt a Pet Month, and I am adopted. Yeah, yeah, I know, Mum wrote about me here, but I want to speak out for adopting (shelter) Pets in particular so I made a quick list for you.

Reasons to adopt a Shelter Pet :-

  • You are not supporting evil puppy and kitty mills.
  • You are adopting a cat or dog, maybe even a mistreated one, and you are it’s chance to believe and love.
  • You are giving yourself a chance to Smile, Laugh, Walk the Dog and make your heart SING!
  • You can adopt that senior cat that makes you laugh, you know, the one that purrs AND PURRS and plays like a kitten!
  • You are keeping pet microchip companies in business! This is a GOOD thing 🙂
  • Shelters care for ALL their pets – you adopt a cat or dog that is happy, well fed, vetted and loved by the volunteers.
  • You are helping keep @PankythePanfur’s Mum in a job – his mum Edna works for Nutro – they ROCK the healthy food thing!
  • You learn patience, love, gentleness from your new pet.
  • You snatch one more LIFE from the grim jaws of death at animal control – Go on, make that TWO lives!
  • You give a life new hope, new confidence, new family, new love.

Now, get out there, work out your budget, and see if you have space in your life, and your heart for a shelter pet.

Great post! Adoption is so important. Wanting a mini-me of the cat you have isn’t a good reason to breed yourself another litter of kittens that adds to the total number of cats needing to find homes. There are so many cats in need of adoption. Don’t add to the problem, but be a part of the solution instead.

    You forgot an important point:

If you adopt a shelter pet, it makes room for them to save another pet from a kill shelter or from the streets so you’re actually saving 2 lives.

I always encourage humans to adopt from “open admission” (i.e., kill) shelters because it means they are literally saving a life. With no-kill shelters, lives have already been saved – they just need a good home. It is hard for some people to go to kill shelters, but I think everyone should – and use it as motivation to help change things in their town.

Great post, Harvey! We agree … shelter pets are the BEST! All of us are rescues, and our mom and dad volunteer at our local shelter to help the cats there find forever homes. 🙂

    Hugs and headbonks,

Harvey (that was our human grandpa’s name!), all such good points to keep in mind. Mommy would love to adopt a couple more kits, but our dad says, “Eight is Enough.” She continues to support her favorite rescue/TNR group. Have a good weekend and keep spreading the word. Purrs and hugs, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

Another good reason to get a pet from a shelter. They come all spayed and neutered which is so important. If everyone would spay and neuter, we wouldn’t have so many pets in the shelters. Great post.
