The Lions roar, and conquer all, for a while at least! Well, I’m a Kiwi cat, I am behind the All Blacks guys, how could I not, being from the Land of the Long White Cloud – Aotearoa!!
Hello there, Harvey here and even though it’s winter here in New Zealand and active sports like rugby are popular pastimes, it is also a time when classical music events are at their busiest across the country.
The two collided in big way at the start of July, with a major rubgy match Lions vs All Blacks, and a light classical music concert, all within a 24 hour period here in the capital! Many people went to both events, and we cats stayed at home but we sent Mum out to the concert (in the cold) MOL!!
- However cold it is, the Kiwi’s are giving their British friends a warm welcome!
Lions Have Been Travelling the Country
The visitors have been challenging top teams, and also playing three international test matches throughout June and July 2017. If you are a fan of the rugby nitty-gritty wikipedia has a terrific page packed with details. For the rest of us who are admiring the dozens of red-coated supporters sightseeing before the match in Wellington, there is a lot excitement at the national pride of the countries involved.
Lands of Hope and Glory – The Classical Concert
Mum and Dad visited Wellington on the Friday evening before the match to see a concert by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. It celebrated both Great Britain and New Zealand in the musical selection played. There was also a glamorous compere Helen Medlyn opera singer and biker chick (she rides a Harley Davidson!) who introduced the music. We did a fun trailer for everyone which we hope catches some of the excitement of the sporting and musical week-end.
Why Are We Telling You About the Lands of Hope and Glory Concert???
Because, believe it or not, you will be able to hear it broadcast on the radio, online, on Radio New Zealand Concert, next Friday the 7th of July!!! The concert is a collection of shorter pieces including overtures, singalongs, and a wild party on the Scottish island of Orkney complete with a bagpiper! There is nothing scary for those unfamiliar with orchestras and ‘classical’ stuff.
I will be snuggled up on the sofa with the heating on, at home with Mum and Dad, ready to listen and re-live the fun! Try to join us!
Athough as you may be on the other side of the world, or even in Australia, you may need to check your watches for your local time. Here’s a rough guide to the times. We think more European friends than USA buddies might listen in. If Radio New Zealand have the programme a “listen again concert” we will report back as soon as we know.
- New Zealand Time 7 p.m.
- Sydney, Aus. 5 p.m.
- Great Britain – 8 a.m. Thursday
- New York 3 a.m.
- San Francisco – Midnight
Very few of you will have visited our Michael Fowler Concert Hall here in Wellington so here’s shot of the interior lit up at its patriotic best!
Oh, and who won the match? The Lions roared proudly to win 24 – 21 against the All Blacks. The Test decider is next week-end in Auckland! Join us and listen to the concert if you can!
