We were asked recently ‘can you blog and work full-time’ as well – a good question for busy folks who want to build a blog. A good question for those who are keen to get online, or create an online presence, but who need to pay the bills too!
A full-time job will take a lot of your day, but if you are organised and can use the time you have available, there is no reason why you can’t build a good reputation as a blogger with quality content with a limited ‘time budget’. You can blog and work full-time.
How Much Can You Blog While Working?
Unless you want to start losing your quality of life, and sleep, work out how many posts you have time for. One a week is fine.
If you worry it’s not enough and feel you want to add more to your blog, add something visual like a Sunday Selfie, or a Wordless Wednesday post. Remember, quality matters while you are building content.
I Can Only blog Once a Week!
Not a bad idea! Five weeks = five quality posts = stuff people will want to read. Find your ‘why’ – this will inspire your content. Build a body of good work. Google likes ‘good content’ and so do your readers.
- NOTE Our blogging colleague Erin the Cat Princess blogs once a week. This did not stop her achieving a Finalist place in the BlogPaws® 2016 Nose to Nose Awards.
Five Steps to Blogging Success While You Are Working
We will work on the basis you plan to blog once a week but this works for any number, just take it easy to start with!
What is your GOAL for this week?
Is it a blog post (text), a photo essay, a How To with video? Make your decision, so you can make your plan.
Work out WHEN you will get your work done
Can you only work at home for an hour each evening? Research material online while commuting on the train or bus? Have you got half an hour over lunch?
- Find those chunks of time and use them.
Break your goal into achievable bite-sized chunks
Plan how you will try to use the time you have available. Here’s an example
- Research and draft ideas for post (2 days)
- Research for post (1 day)
- Source and edit images or video (2 days)
- Write/Schedule post (2 days)
- Plan your promotion to spread the word – announce it on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr or Instagram!
Use the media and equipment at your disposal
Can you use your smartphone, or a really cool notebook to jot down ideas ‘on the fly’.
Upload ‘phone notes to Evernote, or Trello, for use later.
Can you use your laptop/iPad in your lunch break to write, or edit pictures/video?
For editing movies on your smartphone, we have editing tips here, and smartphone editing apps here.
- One task at a time,
- One step at a time,
- Get the blog post done,
- and this will keep you on track to enjoy your blogging adventure.
Remember – Never Give Up!
Sometimes things just won’t work out – life happens! A post is late going up, an image isn’t quite right, but don’t stress. The important thing is not to beat yourself up about falling off the ‘blogging wagon’. Pick yourself up and climb back on!
That one good blog post a week will slowly grow your blog into something you can, and will, be proud of!
OK go do it. Now, if you have time – read some of the inspiring comments, different people, different ideas – all relevant to you the blogger.
