Montage or Slideshow - Grand Canyon Arizona Cloudscape

Montage or Slideshow for the presentation of images? This was the question we posed list month here.

We asked which presentation method our readers preferred when viewing images and reports from places like BlogPaws, or places we visited for the blog.

  • A Montage allows you to see all the images at once
  • A Slideshow shows images individually scrolling one after the other.

Thanks to the comments and votes on our post, and the votes.  We gained insights into how things works for everyone, or who has issues with the options available. The voting was very close indeed and seems to be a combination of personal preference, and what anyone’s technology could cope with, which is not surprising in our age of multiple communication forms!

Here’s what we found in the montage or slideshow vote :-

  1. 23 people voted. Slideshow 52% Montage 48%. There was only one vote between the two, so opinions were evenly divided.
  2. Some readers like the Montage presentation because they can see all the images, choose which picture interests them most, then click to ‘biggify’ it.
  3. Some mentioned that the Slideshow allows you to see the pictures bigger, and better and one at a time  This was appreciated.

BUT we also found…..

  1. Slideshows don’t always work for everyone. This may be due to how different devices cope. Another idea – their software isn’t a good fit with the slideshow software. We are not sure, but perhaps you can suggest a possible reason?
  2. Some people do not realise that in a montage they can click and enlarge the images to see them better. We think that a way around this would be to add some kind of ‘Click to Biggify’ note above the montage. Do any of you do this?

Thank You Graphic Dash Kitten

Thank you everyone for responding to the poll, it was so interesting to get your responses and how close the opinions were! We hope you found our ‘pocket survey’ interesting!

Until I changed provider 3 months ago I would definitely have said montage. The internet was so slow with 0.5mbps that videos and slideshows took forever to load, if at all. Even blogs with a lot of high definition photos would freeze and I would end up with a blank square with the little icon in the corner. I can totally understand anyone with slow internet preferring a montage. We are on fibre now, but because of where we live it is still comparatively slow compared with the high speeds of 72mbps in the built up areas. We get 27mbps which is wonderful to that which I have been used to, and is ample to load videos and slideshows. Having said that, there is still one blog which freezes on me, but it is one that I enjoy visiting, so I wait.
I think it would be a good idea when you post a montage to mention that you can enlarge the photos individually. I only found out by chance on your vote post when I clicked expecting the whole montage to enlarge.

What an interesting survey! I will click on montage photos if I know they can be made bigger, though sometimes I just try it anyway. That is something I need to learn to do on my own blog – make photos “bigifyable” (ha – that’s a word, right?).
My only issue with slideshows is that sometimes they go too slow (not loading, but just from photo to photo), and I’m always in a rush! 🙂

Interesting results. We didn’t vote because we really didn’t have a preference one way or the other.

Wow, that was a close survey! I like both, montage because you can get a quick glimpse at them all and slideshows because you can see the picture in a larger format. 🙂

To be honest it’s not something I had ever thought of. I’m just happy if I can find a good image to add to a post. Very informative, I’ll have to investigate further.

That IS interesting that the voting results were so close. I love your term, “biggify”. It’s so much more attention-getting than the word, “enlarge”.

I’m not sure why, but I am actually surprised by the close results on the poll. For some reason, I would have thought the montage would have scored much higher because there can often be slow site load times when there are slideshows on a site. The type of slider being used as well as one’s server limitations can impact the load times. All that being said, I don’t really have a preference. I just like great pictures like your shot of the Grand Canyon!

Thanks for sharing these results! It’s interesting to see that the votes were so close. It’s also interesting to see that some can’t always run a slideshow effectively. I often have issues with people’s video content but not usually slideshows unless they are really big.

This is so interesting and I didn’t see the original post – I love that the results show such a close tie between both. I’ve always struggled with this when posting slide shows on my blog. I really like the montage option so I’m in that camp. I agree with some other folks that the slideshows sometimes go to slow… Great survey!

This was a very interesting poll! Thank you for bringing it up. I haven’t really used slideshows, but seeing that half of the responders prefer them, I am going to have to try one sometime to see how it goes over with my readers. My biggest concern about slideshows is the load time. I have a featured posts slider at the top of my site and it takes forever to load. I’ve been considering replacing it with something else. Maybe people are enjoying it more than I thought!

What a great post and I like the idea of a survey, Marjorie. You are spot on that some folks don’t realize they need to click a slideshow. Also, sometimes certain pieces of software are slow to load on sites and folks abandon the slideshow. I love that you showcased the results.

We don’t use montage much because the photos can be too small. And not many people click to bigify, even when we suggest it.
